Aurora, Ohio (PRWEB) July 16, 2010

In football you expect to be tackled, but too many parents get tackled by all the choices they have to make when they have a child who struggles with reading and learning. As we enter the 15th year of observing August as National Children’s Vision and Learning Month, Larry Fitzgerald helps to set the record straight on the critical link between vision and learning.

“Parents don’t realize that you need over 15 visual skills to succeed in reading, learning, sports, and in life. Seeing ‘20/20′ is just one of those visual skills,” says Fitzgerald.

When parents assume that their child’s vision is fine it can be quite a maze for parents to navigate to figure out why their child is having so much difficulty with reading and learning, especially when professionals disagree and vested interests are involved. Many parents get overwhelmed by all the information and conflict and just let the system take care of their children by making accommodations. Other parents refuse to be tackled and keep searching until they find real help.

Dr. Katherine Donovan, a psychiatrist from Charleston, S.C., was one of those parents who didn’t give up, “It wasn’t until my own child had problems with reading that I discovered that my medical training was missing a very valuable piece of information which turned out to be the key to helping my daughter, Lily. While I had taken Lily to many ophthalmologists and learning specialists, desperate to understand why this very bright child still could not read well, or write legibly at age 12, I always got the same answers: ‘her vision’s fine’ and ’she’s dyslexic.’”

“As a physician, I had been taught that vision therapy was controversial and could not treat learning disabilities. However, my personal experience with my daughter proved to me that vision therapy worked, when nothing else did,” Dr. Donovan shares. “While vision therapy cannot treat learning disabilities, per se, it absolutely corrected a vision problem which was blocking Lily from being able to learn. After a visit with a developmental optometrist who tested over 15 visual skills critical to reading and learning, I was shocked to learn that Lily was seeing double out to three FEET?which meant that when she tried to read, the words were double. No wonder she hated to read!”

Following optometric vision therapy, “Lily now reads 300 pages a day, in her free time; she puts down ‘reading’ as her favorite hobby; and she has a 95-average at Buist Academy with NO help from me on her homework! Prior to this, I’d been spending three to four hours each night, for many years, tutoring Lily,” Dr. Donovan shares with delight.

Even though there is a wealth of optometric research which proves vision therapy works, as Dr. Donovan mentioned there is false information in the medical community about vision therapy. This can be confusing for parents, especially when it comes from their child’s pediatrician.

Dr. Joseph Manley, a physician and medical expert witness for medico-legal cases, states, “The conclusions (particularly the failure to recommend vision therapy for children likely to benefit from it) of the American Academy of Pediatrics report on Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia and Vision are based on exclusion of the most relevant data and inconsistent application of the Academy’s stated criteria for selecting evidence. They fail to acknowledge abundant published and anecdotal evidence supporting the use of vision therapy. This overlooked evidence includes controlled trials, observational studies, case reports and consensus of experts?the same kinds of data that underpin the daily practice of medical professionals.”

Optometric vision therapy treats vision problems that make reading and learning difficult. While vision therapy does not treat dyslexia, vision problems can often be misdiagnosed as learning disabilities such as dyslexia or even ADHD. According to the American Optometric Association, studies indicate that 60 percent of children identified as “problem learners” actually suffer from undetected vision problems, and in some cases have been inaccurately diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

“I was fortunate that my vision problems were caught early in life,” says Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald credits the optometric vision therapy he received as a child as one of the keys to his success. He had a vision problem that was making it difficult to pay attention in school and his grandfather, Dr. Robert Johnson, a developmental optometrist in Chicago, Illinois, diagnosed the vision problem and prescribed the appropriate treatment.

Fitzgerald went through optometric vision therapy under his aunt’s guidance, Dr. Stephanie Johnson-Brown, who is currently the executive director of the Plano Child Development Center, a not-for-profit vision care service corporation which was co-founded by her father, Dr. Johnson, in 1959. The center specializes in vision education and the identification and remediation of vision development problems in children and adults.

Not all eye doctors test for learning-related vision problems, so it is important for parents to ask the right questions. Call your eye doctor’s office and ask the following two questions:

1. Do you test for learning-related vision problems?

2. Do you provide an in-office vision therapy program when indicated, or will you refer me to someone who does?

If the answer is no to either one or both of these questions, visit COVD’s website, http://www.covd.org, to find a developmental optometrist near you.

“Vision therapy made a big difference in my life and my career,” says Fitzgerald, “Don’t get tackled by misconceptions about the vital role vision plays in your child’s education. Take the time to learn more about how vision problems can interfere with success in school and in sports and visit COVD’s website today.”

(PRWEB) May 19, 2004

The American Football Association, the national association for semi-pro football teams and leagues across the country, has recently contracted with InVision Publishing Company, Inc. to produce a monthly sports publication geared exclusively at the semi-pro level of the sport.

The American Football News (AFN) will be a tabloid-sized news/magazine fashioned after that of the Pro Football Weekly (PFW) newspaper. While PFW is considered by those in the know to be the informational `bible’ of the NFL, the AFN is hoping to capture that same kind of fan and participant following from those who are dedicated to the American Football Association and their “Semi-Pro and Proud” movement.

The 32 page inaugural issue of AFN will roll off the presses during the second week in June `04 and will contain feature stories about semi-pro football news makers and record breakers from coast-to-coast. The June cover will have a full color photo of AFA Semi-Pro Football Hall of Famer, Eric Swann, and a story on how Swann became an NFL `first round’ draft choice with the Arizona Cardinals . . . without ever playing a down of college football.

Another story, headlined `They Weren’t Always in the NFL’ – gives some accounting of the number of players, coaches and front office people who over the years were able to make that big jump from the `semi-pro’s to the pros’. The sub head to that story reads: “Yes you can get `there’ from here . . . but it isn’t easy”! Something every semi-pro player in the world can attest to.

While AFN will help promote the many events sponsored or sanctioned by the AFA through the long semi-pro football season, its main function will be to bring `awareness’ to those players, coaches, executives, trainers, equipment managers, officials, and team/league administrators – who toil in the obscurity of the semi-pro football venues both in the United States – and internationally as well.

Updated league standings, national `power ratings’, AFA `Player of the Month’ (offense and defense) awards, top performer stories, player transactions, even a monthly semi-pro football crossword puzzle and cartoon will all be regular items found on the pages of the American Football News.

Special columns reporting on the activities of the AFA National Semi-Pro Football Coaches Assn., AFA Players Assn., AFA Officials Assn., AFA Alumni Club and the annual AFA Hall of Fame Induction Dinner will also live on the printed pages of the American Football News.

Inasmuch as the American Football Association is in its 25th year of operation and is a 501(c)(3) public/tax exempt non-profit corporation – it is required to register its semi-pro teams and leagues as `senior amateur’. As such, the AFA qualifies for special tax-exempt benefits in order to service its members worldwide. Part of this year’s awareness program will find the AFA explaining to the football world via AFN – that the semi-pro level of the sport is `more’ than just a hundred year old lower level (of the great American game) – with no purpose or guidance.

AFN readers will be amazed to learn that there are more than 600 semi-pro teams playing in 60 different leagues coast-to-coast. And, that those teams and leagues provide playing venues for over 50,000 active players, coaches, executives, etc. on an annual basis.

The AFN publishers are also hoping to impress many of the half million or so former (and retired) semi-pro’ers who qualify to be listed in the American Football Association’s history books as Semi-Pro Football Alumni. “Getting the Alumni Back in the Game” will be the name of a future feature story designed to attract retired players, coaches and administrators to help support our current crop of dedicated footballers in promoting their teams to their local communities. You’d be amazed at the number of local businessmen, entertainers, civic leaders, NFL and Arena Football League staffers, etc., who qualify for semi-pro football alumni status.

The national association will be encouraging their member teams to order extra copies of the AFN each month in order to circulate them to their local news media and community leaders – to show them the sport of semi-pro football is actually better organized on the national level then they may have previously thought. And, that their local teams are a part of the fastest growing sports industry in the country today, adult amateur (semi-pro) football. “Semi-Pro and Proud” is no longer just the AFA’s slogan – “It’s a sports movement”!

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (PRWEB) May 14, 2008

To achieve the goal of developing the most technologically advanced IT network for speed and delivery of communications technologies, new launch processing systems, and use of bandwidth-rich video to support the Constellation Program’s current and future requirements, NASA engineers are positioning empty blown fiber tubes throughout various facilities at Kennedy Space Center, including the Launch Control Center, Vehicle Assembly Building, and the newly remodeled manufacturing facility.

“Our objective at Kennedy Space Center is to build an on-demand network that is ready for anything, including the quick implementation of bandwidth intensive video technologies and new launch systems, and a quick response time for getting crucial projects completed on time and on budget for the Constellation Space Exploration Program,” comments Mathew K. Smisor, NASA’s telecom systems engineer. “With air blown fiber technology, we can make network expansions, upgrades, and reconfigurations in minutes or hours rather than the days or weeks associated with a traditional fiber optic infrastructure, while having real-time control of bandwidth and network capacity.”

“Many of our projects-such as the immediate transmission via fiber of digital images showing the status of ice buildup on the space shuttle Discovery – resolve costly delays and life and death situations if it’s a manned spacecraft,” explains Outside Plant Engineer, Lawrence Wages. “By adopting an air-blown fiber infrastructure, we can quickly and easily make necessary network reconfigurations and changes at nearly a moment’s notice and at a fraction of the cost of a conventional fiber optic system, providing us with the means to be more responsive to mission critical situations while being fiscally responsible with budget dollars.”

As NASA’s technology and network requirements are continually defined, engineers will have the ability to quickly and easily blow in and blow out the specific amount and type of fiber needed within the empty tube structure to upgrade, reconfigure, or expand the network, even in secure and limited access areas, with just the amount of bandwidth required to accomplish their various network projects. With a traditional fiber optic infrastructure, fiber optic cable is pulled, requiring investment of today’s capital for the installation of a predetermined amount and type of fiber based upon the forecast of what technology and network needs might be over a five to six year period. Rather than limit bandwidth capacity, the Air-blown Fiber technology provides NASA with immediate control of bandwidth, no disruption to operations eliminating network downtime, a pay-as-you go approach to budgeting, and the flexibility to quickly meet necessary network changes?essential for NASA’s vision for the technologically advanced Constellation Program, the new chapter in space exploration.

The FutureFLEX Air-blown Fiber infrastructure has also been deployed at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, California since 2005, serving as its wireless infrastructure and backbone for the high-speed sharing of information among its research facilities and new program enhancements.

Fountain Hills, AZ (PRWEB) September 4, 2009

Coach Zauner, one of the nation’s top football kicking coaches, has launched ‘Kicking For The Gold’ in an effort to make ‘kicking a ball’ an Olympic sport.

Zauner says this idea was inspired by the 2008 Olympic games.

“While watching Michael Phelps win his eight gold medals for swimming during the 2008 Olympics, I again started wondering who was the greatest kicker in the world’, says Zauner, “or to be more specific, who would be the best in the world at ‘kicking a ball’ for distance and accuracy.”

Zauner says ‘kicking a ball’ is perhaps the most wide-spread sports activity in the world and he is surprised it has not become an Olympic event.

Zauner, a former 13 year NFL Special Teams Coordinator who coached special teams for the Minnesota Vikings, Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals and is presently joining the newly formed United Football League (UFL) as a special teams coordinator for the California Redwoods, is considered by many to be one of the best kicking coaches in the country. The list of NFL specialists he has worked with is unprecedented and includes having coached or worked with 19 Pro Bowlers.

Zauner says he has an idea who some of the best kickers are in American football, but wonders what would happen when you throw into the mix soccer, rugby and Australian rules football players.

“Wouldn’t it be fascinating to find out who, out of all these individuals, would kick a ball the highest, the furthest and with the greatest accuracy,” asks Zauner. Adding, “and what better way to find out then by making it an Olympic event,”

Immediately after the 2008 Olympics, Zauner wrote the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and requested they consider this idea. Zauner says he is still waiting for a response.

Click here for Coach Zauner’s letter to the IOC.

While waiting for an IOC response, Zauner says he has discussed this concept with many kickers from around the world, including football, soccer, rugby, and Australian rules football players. He says they have all supported the idea.

One player who enthusiastically supports the idea of kicking for a gold medal is former NFL football great Gary Anderson. Anderson who is originally from South Africa recently left the NFL as its leading scorer. He is one of the many kickers Zauner has interviewed for the ‘Kicking For The Gold’ website. Anderson says he might even consider coming out of retirement to ‘Kick For The Gold.”

“I was recently introduced to this idea of kicking for an Olympic gold medal,” says Anderson, “and all I can say is I wish someone had thought about this a little bit sooner because I think it is a fascinating idea.”

Anderson says when you consider some of the other activities which have become Olympic sports -activities which have far less global participation then kicking a ball- it only makes sense for the IOC to pursue this idea, saying “I may just have to come out of retirement because I’d like to try and win a gold medal!”

Anderson adds, “I would whole-heartedly suggest to the Olympic committee to give this idea some very sincere and deep thought on how to actually evolve it into an Olympic event,” he says. Adding that even though he may be a bit ‘beyond’ kicking for a gold medal, he would love to see his son -who is following his father’s steps as a kicker- compete for gold in the Olympics.

Click here for Gary Anderson video interview.

Another kicking specialist Zauner has interviewed is Mitch Berger. Berger, who was the punter for the 2009 Super Bowl World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers and is also a two-time Pro Bowler, says he has won many accolades over his career, but the one thing he doesn’t have is an Olympic Gold medal.

“I’ve had a 15 year career in the NFL, made two Pro Bowls, played on a Super Bowl championship team and have basically been kicking a ball since I was six years old,” says Berger. “But the one thing I don’t have is an Olympic gold medal.”

Berger says being able to ‘kick a ball’ for an Olympic gold medal is a very interesting idea, saying that he has always had the dream of being able to compete for a medal in the Olympics. He says he realizes there is little chance that American football will become an Olympic sport, therefore ‘kicking a ball’ for a gold medal would keep his childhood dream alive.

“The finest kickers in the NFL are from all around the world,” says Berger. “Wouldn’t it be great to bring them together with the best soccer, rugby and Australian rules football players to see just who is the best at ‘kicking a ball.”

Click here for Mitch Berger video interview.

Although Zauner is working with and getting opinions about this idea from some of the top kicking specialists in the world, he says he would like to have input from every kicking specialist or anyone who is a fan of kicking.

So, to ensure everyone can voice their thoughts on the idea (and to voice their opinion to the IOC), he is asking kickers -or kicking enthusiasts- to create a video and post it to YouTube with the tag: ‘Kicking For The Gold’.

Zauner says these videos should include a persons thoughts on how ‘kicking’ as an Olympic sport might be implemented. Should it be an individual or team sport? What kind of ball might be used? Or should a new universal ball be created specifically for the event? And perhaps most importantly, who do they think would be the best ‘kicker’ in the world? Would that be a football, soccer, rugby, or Australian rules football player. Or would it be someone who has never played the game?

Zauner says he will then select some of these videos and post them to the ‘Kicking For The Gold’ website and blog.

Click here for sample YouTube video from former University of Tennessee kicker James Wilhoit.

“I have no idea who would be the ‘best’ kicker in the world,” says Zauner. “But by creating ‘kicking a ball’ as an Olympic event we would certainly be able to find out. And wouldn’t that be cool.”

Laguna Beach, CA (PRWEB) January 30, 2009

If it’s action you crave, and the 7 point spread for this Sunday’s Super Bowl match up does not tickle your fancy, help has arrived.

The vast majority of Las Vegas and offshore book makers spent the better part of last week concocting a virtual smorgasbord of proposition wagers which have now been made available to the betting public as the Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the upstart Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. The game will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, a city hosting their fourth NFL Championship Game.

Long gone are the days in which the betting action was confined to strictly the point-spread and over/under. Today the proliferation of proposition wagering options has turned the Super Bowl into a gamblers’ dream, with enough options to make Pacman Jones’ rap sheet read like Cat in the Hat.

‘Prop’ bets originated in the early 1980’s as a whim and now provide an expansive wagering menu which ties in to individual players, team performance, and specific events that occur within the game, or in the case of the coin toss or duration of the national anthem, ones immediately preceding it. Variations of the point spread and total are also available.

For example, while the Steelers have settled in as 7 point favorites, a bettor that anticipates a Pittsburgh blowout could opt to lay more points in exchange for better odds.

In recent years, prop wagers have taken on such a creative flavor, that they now link other sporting events taking place in and around the Super Bowl to players, stats, and events in the big game itself.

Two years ago, one casino went so far as to offer props that pitted players of the then present day Bears against those of the Mike Ditka coached 1985 team that ran off 46 consecutive points en route to their annihilation of the Patriots in Super Bowl XX.

Immediately preceding the Super Bowl, LeBron James and company will make the 169 mile trek across I 80 to take on Allen Iverson and the Pistons in a nationally televised NBA contest. Creative betting shops have hung a 1 and a half point number favoring LeBron to score more points than Mike Tomlin’s Steelers in addition to a few other game related wagers to stir your competitive juices.

As props vary from venue to venue, and are often times created by innovative managers striving to set their book apart from the competition, the number of props that are available has grown to mammoth proportions safely exceeding 500 in number when accounting for Nevada and offshore outlets.

The sheer size of the prop menu will create betting opportunities, as the more options that the lines makers make available, the more prone he is to an oversight or miscalculation.

A classic example of that occurred in Super Bowl XXXVI as an ‘over/under’ prop for then Rams receiver Ricky Proehl, opened at 14.5 yards, which was inexplicably low based on the numbers which he compiled during the regular season.

Proehl played in all 16 regular season games that season and rang up 563 yards, an average of some 35 per contest and more than twice what the ‘over/under’ opened. Gradually the yardage moved up, eventually closing at 16

Miami, FL (PRWEB) February 15, 2007

Pro Athlete Media, LLC the premier source of information, news and business for professional athletes officially launches: http://www.ProAthletesOnly.com.

From the latest professional sports contracts, marketing deals and business listings to the latest sports news, ProAthletesOnly.com will soon become the favorite information address on the Internet for professional athletes.

This unique website provides the daily reading for professional athletes, retired athletes, their spouses, sports agents, sports marketing professionals and others in their “circle”.

The website includes industry information such as player contract news, sports marketing news, sports business news, labor news, agent news and event information that will interest all professional athletes. The information section of the website also includes a live sports-ticker that features scores, news and transactions.

“Pro athletes needed a source of information that we can call our own,” said Edgerrin James of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, a Partner and Director of Pro Athlete Media, LLC. “We will provide pro athletes with one website that contains industry news, contract and marketing deals, along with business listings that will satisfy our daily information needs.”

The details of that new ground breaking contract or marketing deal, player salaries, in depth features about current issues being discussed in locker rooms across the country and the capability to search business listings in all professional sports cities are some of the features of this new website.

The website is designed to list businesses either by category or location. Each business that is listed on Pro Athletes Only.com can advertise their services on their own web page. Each advertiser has the ability to design and update their web page anytime as desired with text and/or photos by logging into the secured website with their own login and password.

“I believe the business listings on ProAthletesOnly.com will become extremely valuable to the athletes and their families,” said Jaclyn Kelly, the wife of Chicago White Sox outfielder Kenny Kelly and also a Partner in Pro Athlete Media, LLC. “When an athlete is forced to relocate because of a trade or free agency it can be difficult. Finding new housing and schools, transporting cars and hiring a moving company are some of the complex tasks that need to be addressed immediately. This new website will make relocating or finding a certain type of business in a specific city rather easy for the pro athlete and his or her family.”

Contents of Pro Athletes Only.com:

From The Locker Room – News and topics that are being discussed among players in locker rooms everywhere. Who’s hiring and firing which agents, what were the terms of that new ground breaking contract and other issues important to professional athletes.

The snowy mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado is eagerly preparing to host what may fast become the celebrity event of the year: The Pro-Celebrity Union. Formerly hosted by Copper Mountain Resort, this event brings together Hollywood star power, talented musicians and some of the nation’s top skiers and riders, all in the name of charity. ResortQuest Breckenridge lodging offers a full selection of Breckenridge condos and lodging packages in both Breckenridge and Keystone, just steps from all the event activities and slopeside to Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Backed by the Summit Foundation, a local Summit County, Colorado non-profit organization, the Pro-Celebrity Union is a four-day event filled with music and on-mountain exhibitions. Jeremy Bloom, the former Olympic ski team member, University of Colorado football star and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver is on tap to host this year’s event. Bloom’s star-power is sure to propel this young event to the next level.

The Celebrity Union kicks-off Thursday, April 12 with the “Battle of the Badges” Hockey Classic, which pits local celebrities, Vail Resorts and Intrawest Resorts management and professional hockey players against one another for bragging rights and charity fundraising. The week continues with concerts by Nina, Hearing Red, Blue County and Xiren as well as slopeside and superpipe competitions on Breckenridge’s famed Peak 8 Terrain Park.

All event proceed benefit the Summit Foundation and the Pat Tillman Foundation. The Pat Tillman Foundation was created by former Arizona Cardinals football player and US Army Ranger who lost his life in Iraq in 2004. The Tillman Foundation is dedicated to inspiring young people to make positive changes in themselves and the world around them. The Summit Foundation is a public non-profit established in 1984 designed to assist Summit County locals and organizations and to offer a “hands up”, rather than a “hand out” to those in need in the area.
