The Home Sweet Home Campaign kicked off their first “Schools That Care” T-shirt design contest in Gilbert, Arizona this month. This grassroots approach is the first in a series of community outreach campaigns focusing on building awareness and raising funds for war veterans. The Home Sweet Home Campaign has pledged to raise $ 1 million dollars for USA Cares, a 501(c)3 organization who helps post 9/11 military families bear the burdens of service with financial and advocacy support. Ask campaign founder Beth Ann VanHoose how she will do it, “One city and one T-shirt at a time”, is her reply.

Beth Ann was motivated to take action after hearing, piece by piece, one local veteran’s post Iraq and Afghanistan experience. Tim Little, an Army reservist who has served two tours of duty, Tim found himself unable to return to his pre-deployment job, causing extra financial stress on himself and his family. His story is not unlike the thousands of National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty soldiers who have fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

“It shouldn’t be so difficult for our soldiers to find help and resources while they are being evaluated by the VA,” says Beth Ann. “This is why I started the Home Sweet Home Campaign, to hopefully make it a little bit easier for the next soldier in need.” So working closely with Superstition Springs Elementary and Highland High School, over 250 students have entered the contest. Judges representing many walks of life, all with one thing in common, their commitment to our country and to support our soldiers will be picking the top 3 designs. The jury included Ryan Fitzpatrick, NFL Quarterback for the Buffalo Bills and a 2005 Highland High Graduate; Ruth Knowles, president of the Arizona Artist Guild; Tim Little, War Veteran and Purple Heart recipient; and Maria Martens, member of the American Gold Star Mothers.

Three winners will be announced on April 28th and their “one of a kind” T-shirt designs will be featured on the Home Sweet Home website at http://www.OurSoldiers.org. For every T-shirt sold, $ 5.00 will be donated to USA Cares. According to Kim Moorman, Director of Business Development at non-profit USA Cares, who said, “One of the things I like about what they are doing is that they provide a tangible product to everyone who helps them raise money to assist military families.”

The “Schools That Care” contest will travel across the country this fall working with schools in the states of Washington, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina and Georgia. By the end of 2009, the Home Sweet Home website will have over 20 “one of kind” T-shirts featured on their site.

The family of former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Republican congressman, vice presidential candidate and professional football player Jack F. Kemp (1935-2009) has announced its intention to donate his papers to the Library of Congress. The papers are currently on deposit at Pepperdine University.

Born in Los Angeles, Kemp began playing professional football in 1957. He led the Buffalo Bills to American Football League championships in 1964 and 1965. Following his football career, he served nine terms in Congress (1971-1988) as a representative from New York and as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (1989-1993).

During his years in Congress, Kemp was a leading advocate of “supply-side” economics, advancing the argument that cutting taxes would boost economic growth and yield more revenue for the federal government. The 1981 tax cuts signed into law by former President Ronald Reagan were cosponsored by Kemp. He was the first lawmaker to popularize “enterprise zones,” the concept of encouraging development in underserved urban neighborhoods by offering entrepreneurs and investors both tax and regulatory relief to start businesses in the area. Kemp supported this approach in order to foster entrepreneurship and job creation and to expand homeownership among public-housing tenants.

In 1988, Kemp mounted an unsuccessful bid for the presidency, losing the Republican primaries to George H.W. Bush. Once in office, Bush appointed Kemp to his cabinet as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a position he held until 1993. Senator Bob Dole chose Kemp as his 1996 vice-presidential nominee, running against Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

In his later career, Kemp remained active in political and charitable work. He served as director of numerous corporate and nonprofit boards, including Oracle, Hawk Corp, Speedway Motorsports, Habitat for Humanity and the Howard University Board of Trustees. He also served on several advisory boards such as Pepperdine University’s School of Public Policy and the UCLA School of Public Policy. In 2003, he was selected as chairman of the board of USA Football, a national advocacy group for amateur football, created by the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Players Association.

Kemp died on May 2, 2009, after a battle with cancer. Kemp was awarded posthumously the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, by President Obama on Aug. 12, 2009.

The bulk of the collection covers Kemp’s 18 years in Congress, including records pertaining to Watergate and the Reagan administration’s economic agenda. The records of his bids for the presidency and vice-presidency are also included as are those from his tenure at HUD. Personal records include family photographs, coverage of his retirement from Congress and remembrances of his life and work in the aftermath of his death. His writings and a large personal library are also included, along with photographs and video from his football career.

Intrepid cowboys saddled up for the country?s first structured rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1872 about the same time as many of the Historic Hotels of the Rockies were being built. In Wyoming rodeo is more than a sport, it?s a way of life and at the center of it is the American hero and icon, the cowboy. The state is home to some of the most prominent rodeos in the west including Cheyenne Frontier Days, Cody Stampede and Laramie Jubilee Days. Colorado?s Historic Hotel members are located near many of the state?s rodeo grounds and include Castle Marne, Delaware Hotel, Historic Hotel Colorado, New Sheridan Hotel, Peck House, and the Strater Hotel.
