My Big Fat Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding
(PRWEB) February 6, 2004
When “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” star Rikki Lee Travolta takes his wedding vows on Valentine’s Day, February 14, his “I Do” will be seasoned with practice from hundreds of appearances as the groom in the longest running comedy in theater history, but this time they will be for real.
Brought to Chicago in 1997 to revitalize the “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” franchise as its first celebrity guest star, Travolta is credited as reinventing the role of the groom. He went on to define the role in appearances throughout the world.
Based on the critical and commercial success of Travolta’s appearances throughout the United States, Mila Kunas (“That 70’s Show”), Frankie Avalon (“Grease”), New York Met Lee Mazzilli, and Joey McIntyre (New Kids on the Block, “Boston Public”) have performed in association with “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding.”
Another Path
Although he will forever be remembered as the dashing groom in “Tony n’ Tina’s,” the preparations for Travolta’s real life nuptials have followed a path more similar to another famous wedding comedy with Chicago roots: “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”
Written by actress Nia Vardalos and produced by Rita Wilson and Oscar winner Tom Hanks, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is the highest grossing independent film of all time, generating over $ 241-million in worldwide box office and electronic media sales.
In the film, an All American man (played by John Corbett) sets out to marry a woman from a large, ethnic family (Vardalos). To get to the altar involves crossing a number of cultural barriers. For one, the groom must convert to the bride’s Orthodox religion.
Cut to Travolta’s Big Fat Real Life Wedding.
In order to have their marriage recognized by the church of his fiancé Sonia Angel Rihani, Travolta had to be baptized in the Antiochian Orthodox faith.
All Wet
In the film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” the adult baptism provides big laughs by incorporating the use of a child’s wading pool in the church. Travolta’s real life baptism followed a similar pattern.
The similarities between Travolta’s marriage and Vardalos’ celluloid counterpart don’t stop with the baptism. Travolta has had to learn a new language Arabian.
“Learning a new culture has been entertaining,” says Travolta with his trademark grin. His new bride has seven siblings, each with a family. The leading man has become an instant uncle to 16 nieces and nephews. It’s a role he handles with panache.
Playing Santa
When the children were gathered around the tree at Christmas raising a ruckus over Santa’s delayed arrival, Travolta quietly slipped out of the house and called as Santa on his cell phone to tell each child individually he was on his way to deliver their presents but couldn’t come until they went to sleep. There was no fuss getting the kids to bed that night.
Travolta’s fast-thinking jump into the role of Santa hints to his training in improvisational comedy.
Vardalos and Travolta are both alum of Chicago’s famed comedy center Second City. Other veterans of the Improv hub include “Saturday Night Live” star Horatio Sanz, George Wendt of “Cheers” fame, and the late Chris Farley.
Recently Travolta published his first novel, “My Fractured Life” which includes the details of his role in revitalizing the “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” franchise, focusing heavily on his work with the Chicago company and producers Anthony and Joseph Tomaska.
TOP TEN
A surprise hit, the book has been named a Top Ten Featured Entertainer Biography by Amazon.com and will be made into a film.
Not surprisingly, Amazon.com reports the mutual popularity of the DVD “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” with Travolta’s book among online customers.
“Travolta has a great way of looking at Hollywood and the lifestyle of show business,” states the Spokane Spokesman Review Book Club.
Reviews at BarnesandNobel.com call the book “groundbreaking.” The bookseller ranks it a popular purchase among those buying “Running With Scissors,” “The Da Vinci Code,” and “The Secret Life of Bees” which are also set to be translated to film.
“Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” opened Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1988 in New York City and has been staged in over 100 cities worldwide including Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Maui in the United States; as well as in Canada, Japan, and Australia.
The Tomaskas most recently produced “The Rocky Horror Show” in Chicago. Following their success bringing in Travolta as a celebrity star for “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding,” the producer brothers rotated guest stars Jerry Springer, Mancow Muller, and Barry Williams into the “Rocky Horror” cast.
IT’S NOT BUTTER
Like the character of the groom that he made famous on stage in “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding,” Travolta will walk down the isle this Valentine’s day in a white tuxedo. However his hair has changed dramatically since he first donned the white threads of eternal groom Tony Nunzio.
Sporting shoulder length bleached blond hair grown for his role as legendary lover Sir Lancelot in the upcoming DVD “Camelot Excalibur,” Travolta has managed to break the comparisons to relation John Travolta in exchange for those to fellow model and spokesperson Fabio.
Fabio and Travolta take the comparisons of what About Chicago describes as their mutual “long golden hair, athletic builds, and porcelain features” in good humor. In November the two fashion archetypes posed together for pictures in Chicago during the launch of a new clothing line.
Struck by the family-like face-to-face similarity with Fabio, Travolta was also asked by Fabio’s representatives to pose for pictures with the romance cover model’s cousin who was on hand for the promotional event.
“They could be brothers,” reflected Travolta’s manager Drake Miezel of the three men.
Fabio has been described as the “sexiest man in the world” by Cosmopolitan. Travolta has been called “tall, dark, and stunningly handsome” by Playbill Online’s Critic’s Circle.
How Sweet
A Valentine’s Day wedding was a natural choice for Travolta, his bride, and their daughter Jessica Sara Rihani Travolta. They got engaged on Sweetest Day.
The couple met when Sonia enrolled daughter Jessica in a fine arts seminar Travolta was conducting.
“Our eyes met and time stopped. It was like wed already met,” Travolta explains. It turns out they had.
Only after dating and becoming engaged, they realized one day while comparing stories that they had met in a chance encounter 7 years before when Travolta had first come to Chicago to star in “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding.”
“It’s like I’ve spent my whole life looking for her,” says Travolta.
His Kind of Town
Travolta is ranked with Donnie Osmond, soap opera actor Brian Lane Green, and original Broadway star Bill Hutton as one of the preferred stars for productions of the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” staged around the country.
Last year he made headlines as the first member of his family to appear as Danny Zuko in the musical “Grease” since the 1977 film.
He agreed to the guest starring appearance in order to raise money to bring fine arts programs to underprivileged youths. In recognition, Round Lake mayor and former Chicago Bear Bill Gentes named a holiday in Travolta’s honor.
National upscale fashion retailer Carson Pirie Scott, a member company of Saks Incorporated, played host to Travolta as a part of its Social Expo, Saturday, November 8.
As a part of their “History in the Making” season, the Chicago Bulls hosted Travolta as a courtside guest and ambassador of Chicago’s entertainment community at the United Center for its January 9 competition against the visiting Portland Trailblazers.
Travolta’s book features cover art exclusively in the team colors of the Chicago Bulls.
Upon return from honeymooning in Mexico, Travolta will look to take the stage again.
“I’d like to do what I can to bring recognition to all the fine theaters in Chicago,” says Travolta. “It’s because of this city that I found my wife. I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
