Offense-Defense All-American Bowl Moving from Miami to Myrtle Beach Area in 2009

Myrtle Beach, SC (PRWEB) May 9, 2008

The Offense-Defense All-American Bowl , one of the elite high school all-star football games in the nation, is relocating from the Orange Bowl in Miami to the Myrtle Beach area in 2009, Offense-Defense Sports president Rick Whittier announced Thursday.

The O-D All-American Bowl, featuring 88 of the best high school seniors in the country, will be held Jan. 2, 2009, at Coastal Carolina University’s Brooks Stadium. The game will be nationally televised by the Fox College Sports Network and selected Fox Sports affiliates throughout the country.

The 2008 Offense-Defense All-American Bowl was the last game played at the Orange Bowl before its demolition, but O-D Sports officials didn’t have to look far for a new home site. With the company’s headquarters in Myrtle Beach, it made common sense and good business sense to hold the game there.

“Of all the locations and venues that were available to us, none made a better fit than the Grand Strand and Coastal Carolina University,” Whittier said. “It’s a growing community that has been supportive of our efforts and it’s popular destination that will raise the profile of our game and our All-Americans.”

“Our game will be good for the Grand Strand by bringing exposure and visitors to the beach at a time when tourism is slow,” Whittier added. “We hope to put on a showcase the community can be proud of and will embrace for years to come, just as fans can follow these players’ careers for years to come.”

The players are selected for the game from the Offense-Defense Top 100 list – a national ranking system identifying the top players in the country. The O-D Top 100 is so respected that Sports Illustrated signed a two-year agreement for exclusive use of the ranking in its publications.

The players and their families will arrive in Myrtle Beach after Christmas and spend the week practicing and sightseeing on the Strand before the game. The O-D All-American Bowl takes place after the Beach Ball Classic, one of the top high school basketball tournaments in the country.

Efforts are under way to host a national golf tournament and cheerleading and band competitions to help promote the Grand Strand’s sports tourism industry. Plans call for the week of Dec. 26-Jan. 2 to be designated an “All-American Sports Week” in Myrtle Beach, which SI has named an “All-American Sports Town.”

“The Offense-Defense All-American Bowl will increase the number of visitors and the visibility of the Grand Strand,” said Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce president Brad Dean. “With the bowl game, the Beach Ball Classic and some other events that are in the works, this has the potential to be an All-American Sports Showcase that will make the Grand Strand a mecca for high school athletics.”

About Offense-Defense Sports:

Currently in its 40th year, Offense-Defense Football Camps offer 60 camps in 38 cities across the country. Named the Official Football Camp of the NFL Coaches Association and the No. 1 Summer Sports Camp by Sports Illustrated For Kids, O-D Football Camps provide fundamental instruction in a full-contact environment for ages 7-18 from some of the top minds and talents in the game.

Among its impressive role of alumni are NFL quarterbacks Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts), Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Chris Simms (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), wide receivers Chad Johnson (Cincinnati Bengals), Amani Toomer (New York Giants), Steve Smith (Carolina Panthers), Terrell Owens (Dallas Cowboys) and Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), and running backs Fred Taylor (Jacksonville Jaguars), Larry Johnson (Kansas City Chiefs) and Frank Gore (San Francisco 49ers). On the defensive side of the ball, Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens), DeMarcus Ware (Dallas Cowboys), Keith Brooking (Atlanta Falcons) and Jonathan Vilma (New York Jets) are camp veterans.

O-D Football Camps not only focus on teaching the fundamentals of football, but also valuable life skills participants can take with them to the home, school and the locker room. Leadership, teamwork and the importance of getting an education are all part of the core curriculum taught at O-D Camps.

O-D Football Camps offer a three-tiered program of training: Youth/Prep for ages 7-18 that provides fundamental instruction for all skill levels; Select, a non-contact, positional camp for experienced, high school-aged athletes; and Elite, an invitation-only, non-contact camp and showcase for top players. Those who excel at the Elite level will be considered for participation in the O-D All-American Bowl.

As the longest-running, full-contact camp in the country, O-D Sports also is on the cutting edge of new technology and will introduce several new services in time for the fall football season that will revolutionize prep sports. O-D TV will launch “High Live,” an Internet broadcast of as many as 1,000 schools’ sporting events (not just football, but all sports) and give those teams fund-raising potential via advertising sales on the Web site. O-D Sports will provide those schools with the equipment, technology and expertise to take part.

O-D TV also is unveiling a service at its summer camps which will allow parents to watch their kids at practice via the Internet to monitor their child’s progress or just to cure their empty-nest syndrome or for coaches looking to learn the latest NFL teaching techniques.

Authors Help Athletes Tip Scales Safely: Help Determine and Reach Optimal Weight

Champaign, IL (PRWEB) May 20, 2009

When determining whether to gain or lose weight, build muscle, cut fat, or control water weight, athletes often don’t know how to help their bodies comply with their performance goals. Now experienced registered dietitians Michele Macedonio and Marie Dunford answer athletes’ questions and put them on the road to achieving their optimal weight with the upcoming The Athlete’s Guide to Making Weight (Human Kinetics, April 2009).

The book explains how to avoid quick fixes, crash diets, or shortcuts in order to safely achieve weight loss or gain. “Athletes try these methods and find they don’t work and often even hinder their performance,” Macedonio says. “Those who want to gain or lose weight and change body composition to improve performance need to understand that achieving that end is a process.”

Macedonio and Dunford have created a four-step process to help athletes achieve improvements in performance.

Step 1: Assessment. Athletes need to compare their physical characteristics with those of successful athletes in their sport, specifically those who play the same position, to determine whether change in body weight or body composition is needed.

Step 2: Goal setting. Competitors should set broad goals to stay focused on improving performance. However, they must also take small steps to reach those broad goals by setting specific objectives. Ideally, athletes should set several major goals and numerous objectives. Realistic goals and objectives in performance, weight, and health are the basis for creating an action plan.

Step 3: Action plan. Any action plan requires a basic knowledge of nutrition and how muscle is gained and body fat is lost. Understanding these principles will prevent changes that impede progress toward goals or interfere with training and performance. Dietary intake is also a primary focus of any action plan because changing weight or body composition requires modifying the diet. An action plan should include the specific amounts of calories, carbohydrate, protein, and fat that need to be consumed daily.

Step 4: Evaluation and reassessment. The last step in the process provides valuable feedback that can lead to adjustments in goals and objectives and modifications to the strategies for meeting them. Changes in weight and body composition cannot be precisely predicted, and even a well-developed action plan will need some adjustment along the way.

According to Macedonio, many athletes are unsuccessful in their attempts at weight loss or gain because they jump into an action plan that is not based on their personal needs or they set goals that undermine rather than enhance their performance. She warns against starting with an action plan since each step of the process builds on a previous step.

Seattle Concussion Summit Brings Together Athletes of Tragic Injuries to Work For Prevention and Higher Standards; Dinner features ImPACT Test Founder

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 19, 2010

According to statistics by the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury there were over 300,000 football related concussions last year. Over 40% of those players injured returned to play too quickly and another study shows that up to 60% of all head injuries go unreported as players try and “shake it off” and stay in the game.

There were 3.8 Million sports and recreation related concussions just last year according to the Center for Disease control at an annual cost of $ 60 Billion Dollars in Medical costs.

Now at epidemic proportions concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries have been widely reported in recent studies and news stories. The short term risks have long been recognized as many athletes suffer depression, memory loss, mood swings, pain and nausea.

Longer term effects now include dementia and death from CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) as athletes as young as 18 have been confirmed to have been suffering from the deadly killer. CTE is the same brain disease that afflicted Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry last month at age 26.

Now more than ever there is a need for extreme caution in youth sports where kids brains are less developed and the possibility of grave danger much greater. The long and short term risks are becoming more and more clear with better research and all arrows point to more issues then previously thought.

Based upon these facts and the recent injuries and deaths of athletes in the Pacific Northwest several impacted families have had enough. The group has formed a unique Non-Profit organization known as BrainChampions.org and will be hosting an inaugural Dinner and Concussion Summit in Tukwila, Washington on July 30th, 2010. The dinner will be supported by a group that includes 8 Families so far including three families who have worked to pass laws aimed at protecting youth athletes from sports related concussions and brain trauma.

They include Zachary Lystedt and his family of Washington State, Max Conradt of Oregon and his family, and Kort Breckenridge and his family of Idaho. These three boys are the namesakes for the first three laws in the United States which have now touched off a cultural revolution that is changing the way Organizations from Pop Warner to NFL Football treat head injuires.

Joining those families is the Swank family of Spokane, Washington who’s son Drew died last year after receiving a critical head injury in a Friday Night game. Also coming to the summit is Elizabeth Apostol and her 2 year old daughter with her family of Missoula, Montana. Liz was engaged to Dylan Steigers of Missoula who died tragically this Spring after receiving a tragic head injury in a Spring scrimmage at Eastern Oregon University.

Rounding out the group is Matthew Newman, a critically injured High School QB, Josh Morros a Motorcross racer from Nevada, and the Knudsen’s of Portland, Oregon. All of these families have had concussion and brain trauma while competing in sports.

Speaking at the dinner, which will be held at the Comfort Suites in Tukwilla, Washington from 6:30 to 8:30, is Doctor Mark Lovell of the University of Pittsburgh. Doctor Lovell is the Co-founder of ImPACT Concussion testing which is the Gold Standard in Neuro-cognitive baseline testing which the group feels is essential to a proper concussion prevention program. ImPACT has been adopted by the NFL, NHL, and hundreds of Colleges and Universities around the Nation.

Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner, recently sent a letter to the Governors of 44 States urging them to pass legislation like the Lystedt Law of Washington State. “The NFL and its clubs urge you to support legislation that would better protect your state’s young athletes by mandating a more formal and aggressive approach to treatment of concussions,” Goodell wrote to the Governors.

“The dinner is the first event for our organization and this is the first group of severely injured athletes and families to rise up on this issue. Together we will help each other and try and prevent further tragedy. We invite everyone to join us as we work with the best people in the world to get better tools and standards in place at all levels,” said Dirk Knudsen; the group’s founder.

The group will promote what they are calling the “Team 7:15″ Initiative which outlines in a declaration crucial steps schools and youth programs must follow to make the needed changes occur. That document will be signed by all in attendance and forwarded to all schools and administrators in the Region.

“There is a lot more we need to be doing. Practice regimens need to change to minimize non-game hitting, we have to have trainers at all fields and ambulances at all games. The latest Education has to be required of all coaches, parents, and players too. The information is there but just making better helmets is of little help if these things don’t change as well,” Knudsen who is also a coach said. “We have a systemic breakdown in youth sports on this issue but together with all the parties help we can fix it and minimize the number of catastrophic injuries and deaths. We can and will make that happen.”

The group is asking that any and all injured athletes and families who have suffered through concussions and traumatic brain injuries and other interested parties join them by calling 503-799-8383 or visiting the BrainChampions website.

Invites were sent to most local coaches, doctors, and the WIAA which is the body charged with overseeing Washington State High School Athletics.

Former NFL Wife Offers a Straight Talk, No Chaser Retort to the Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man Phenomenon

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) September 29, 2010

Players, cheaters, narcissists and smooth-talkers. When it comes to men behaving badly, ladies, it?s up to you to change their game. Setting the record straight on today?s playing field is a mother-daughter team whose combined experience in marriage, divorce, and dating has involved men from the NBA, NFL and Hollywood, to everyday, normal guys.

A resounding retort to Steve Harvey?s runaway bestseller Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man (January 2009, Amistad) and his forthcoming follow-up Straight Talk, No Chaser (November 2010, Amistad), former NFL wife turned radio and television personality, Shane Hall passes on her relationship how-to in Why Do I Have to Think Like a Man? How to Think Like a Lady and Still Get the Man (October 2010, Farrah Gray Publishing). There is a ?Bonus Chapter? response to Steve Harvey’s Straight Talk, No Chaser

With co-author (and mom) Rhonda Frost, Hall uses her signature straight talk to prove that today?s ?player? mentality was fashioned, nurtured and created by the very women who chastise it. A mother-daughter look at relationships, Why Do I Have to Think Like a Man? gives readers what Harvey could not ? an uncensored, woman?s view on dating.

?It?s not the man that makes the difference, it?s how you deal with the man that makes the difference between heartbreak and a mutually beneficial situation,? says Hall, who was married to Cory Hall of the Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons.

Why Do I Have to Think Like a Man? is based on more than 300 interviews with men and women over 25, and the authors? own dating drama. The book reveals hold-nothing-back truths about deal breakers, commitment, baggage, intimacy, what men really want, and getting what you want in return. And to say the authors have ?been there, done that? in love, sex and marriage is an understatement. They draw on their life experiences with marriage, divorce, domestic violence, single motherhood, being cheated on ? and being ?the other woman.?

?We hope to empower all the women out there selling themselves short, hearing but not listening to the men they date, and seeing but not heeding the obvious warnings,? says Frost. ?Getting the guy isn?t about knowing how they think; it?s about dating smart, knowing what you want, and raising your standards.?

In Why Do I Have to Think Like a Man?, readers will learn:

PBFN founder, Ryan McNeil, formed the organization to allow athletes to network with other athletes, promote their own companies, develop business skills and get exclusive insight from the strategic business partners aligned with PBFN. Members have access to resources customized exclusively to their interests.

McNeil, currently with the San Diego Chargers, has been playing professionally for more than a decade. His tenure in the NFL is a vast departure from the three and a half years of the average NFL player. However, since he was first drafted he has considered himself a “retired athlete in training” and is hoping to pass this theory along to his colleagues; offering them the tools to put theory into action at the upcoming conference.

The concept is to provide customized resources and networking information to current and former pro athletes, of either gender, in any sport, to “help and direct them after they retire, to just have options available to make sounder decisions,” states McNeil. “PBFN Business Development Conference is the ideal forum for athletes to grow their network and start or continue down the path toward professional business success.”
