Acupuncture Keeps Athletes Off the Bench

(PRWEB) April 3, 2003

On March 18th, 2003 the New Jersey Star Ledger reported how a high scoring New York Knicks player traveled out of his way to get acupuncture between games. According to the March 24, 2003 Washington Post, a Chinese ice-skater treated her sprained ankle with just ice and acupuncture. A March 17, 2003 London Times article chronicled the growing relationship between an Oriental Medicine school and a professional soccer team.

The 2003 NCAA Sweet Sixteen has been, as usual, marred by injuries. Keith Bogans’ ankle sprain, Brandin Knight’s chronic knee problems, T.J. Ford’s high ankle sprain, Halston Lane’s torn calf, and Hollis Price’s groin injury limited both their participation and performances in these important games. What might the competition have been like if some of the best players weren’t hindered by slow healing?

Sports acupuncturist Matt Callison, L.Ac., who traveled with the Minnesota Vikings during the 2001 playoffs and now treats many of the San Diego Chargers players, says, “There is much that acupuncture can do for sports injuries, especially combined with western therapy. Acupuncture can quickly relieve pain and inflammation, and move blood stagnation (i.e., release osmotic pressure) away from the injury. This, in turn, creates a more efficient healing environment.”

Besides the additional therapies of acupuncture and external herbal formulations, Chinese medicine provides a more personalized perspective. Dr. Ronda Wimmer, PhD, LAc, points out that, “in many sports medicine and athletic training environments, protocol treatments are used across the board. These treatments focus on the symptoms rather than problem origins.”

Callison adds, “There are differences between east and west as far as treating and managing an acute injury. In the east, the focus is upon both the athlete and the injury while, in the west, it’s just the injury segment. TCM fills in the gaps by addressing the individual in order to maximize their healing potential. In the rehabilitation phase, the protocol is further modified to retrain the athlete for their particular sport.”

Licensure that ensures competency in acupuncture and Chinese herbs is regulated nationally by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (http://www.nccaom.org/ or 703-548-9004).

In California, both herbal and acupuncture competency are tested before an acupuncture license is awarded. See the California Acupuncture Board at http://www.acupuncture.ca.gov/index.html or 916-263-2680.

Minnesota Crowns State’s “Mrs. America” Representative

St. Paul, MN / Whippany, NJ (PRWEB) June 22, 2005

It was a crowning moment when Melissa Young, Mrs. Minnesota – America 2004, proudly handed over her state title and crown to this year’s winner Kimberly Dorn.

“It was my first pageant and it was a lot of fun. I really learned a lot about myself,” shares Dorn.

Judges were tasked with a difficult undertaking as some of Minnesota’s most accomplished married women competed for the title of Mrs. Minnesota – America 2005 and the opportunity to vie for the national Mrs. America 2006 title later this fall in Palm Springs, California.

The contestants, all uniquely extraordinary, showcased their leadership, humanity, intelligence, and beauty in five categories: personal interview, physical fitness, evening gown, costume, and on-stage question. But only one woman walked away with the crown – Kimberly Dorn.

“It [the pageant] was a life changing experience. There were so many amazing women and I am looking forward to the Mrs. America pageant,” continues Dorn.

Dorn is a resident of Bloomington and has been married to her high school sweetheart, Kristopher, for 4½ years. Currently she teaches seventh grade math at Minnesota International Middle School.

No stranger to the spotlight, the new Mrs. Minnesota is a former 6 year member, captain, and Pro Bowl representative for the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders. Currently, she acts as assistant coach for the group.

Both Kimberly and her husband volunteer for Loaves and Fishes and Habitat for Humanity. This summer they will be participating in the Jimmy Carter Work Project through Habitat for Humanity, where 2,000 volunteers will join forces to build 150 homes in one week. This year the JCWP will be held in and around Detroit, Michigan.

“I have such an amazingly supportive family. I have two sisters, Tami Krause, Mrs. Minnesota-America 2003 and Brandi and one brother Cliff. My parents have always encouraged us to dream big and I would say that all of us have done just that.”

Page Education Foundation Reaches $6M Grant Milestone Announces Page Scholar Orientation on August 5, 2006

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) August 5, 2006

Page Education Foundation (PEF) will have an orientation welcoming new and returning Page Scholars on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at the 1st floor cafeteria of the Technical Building at the Minneapolis Community & Technical College at 9:30 am. During the orientation, students will receive information about their Page grants and the important volunteer service they will perform with young children of color in our community (Service-to-Children). Page Scholar Orientation is planned and led by Page Scholars ? highlighting service work performed by last year?s Page Scholars. Page Scholars who renewed their Page grants will meet in small groups to help new Page Scholars understand the goals of the Service-to-Children program. It is an energetic and fun morning for the students who participate.

Former Minnesota Viking Hall of Famer and Minnesota State Supreme Court Judge Alan Page and his wife, Diane Sims Page established PEF in 1988 to encourage students of color to participate in post-secondary education. The couple created the foundation to provide financial assistance for post-secondary education to students of color while fostering positive attitudes about education among school-age children of color.

The PEF gives post-educational grants and provides mentors to youth of color in exchange for their volunteer service to students in K-8th grades. Each year, the PEF awards grants up to $ 2,500 to Minnesota students attending a post-secondary educational institution in the state of Minnesota. In the past 18 years, Page Scholars have volunteered more than 200,000 hours of mentoring and tutoring through the Service-to-Children program.

The mentoring/tutoring program provides children with positive role models who encourage success and pursuing dreams. Page Scholars also learn responsibility and leadership skills, such as how to coordinate projects, how to interact constructively with others, and conflict resolution.

Former Page Scholar Attorney DeGalynn Wade credits the foundation for shaping her involvement in the community. She shares, ?I?ve seen the benefits of community service with the students I?ve mentored. I?ve actually seen the mission of the Page Education Foundation come to light in my own experience. The Foundation provided me with mentors. They gave me the resources and tools to help me set goals.?

Since 1988, with the support of the business and philanthropic communities, more than $ 6 million in educational grants have been awarded to 3002 Page Scholars. In November 2005, the foundation raised over $ 100,000 as it hosted former President Bill Clinton during a charity event.

To continue the support of this foundation, corporations may participate as donors for the Page Education Foundation. Contributors of United Way may request on their contribution forms that a portion of their monies be donated to the foundation. Many corporations also offer matching gift programs allowing donors to increase the impact of their donation to PEF.

For media inquiries, donation inquires, or to learn more about the Page Education Foundation, contact the Administrative Director Ramona Harristhal at (612) 332-0406. You may also visit the website at http://www.page-ed.org.

Charles Jay Stands at $985K in Challenge Against SuperiorBook — Handicapper Will Keep Playing at Sportsbook Until One Side Has the Other’s Entire Bankroll

Elkhart, IN (PRWEB) November 4, 2006

After another weekend of the NFL season, handicapper Charles Jay has a little catching up to do in his $ 1 Million Sports Betting Challenge against SuperiorBook. But he doesn’t think that will be very much of a problem.

“We re-tooled our strategy and made up for a tough Saturday with a pretty good weekend in the NFL,” Jay says. “Actually, it started early Sunday morning when I had the ‘over’ in the Hawaii-Idaho game and ended with a big play on New England over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.”

Coming into the current football weekend, Jay stands at $ 985,310 in the Challenge – a unique competition in which he started with a million-dollar bankroll, and will continue to play at SuperiorBook, availing himself of the vast number of wagering options the sportsbook has to offer, until one side has won a million dollars from the other.

Since Jay has been a winning sports handicapper for over a decade and a half, he can easily see himself coming out on the positive side. Doubling his bankroll, however, presents a particular challenge-within-a-challenge.

“You’ve got to exercise some discipline and have patience,” he says. “You can’t win it all in one fell swoop. You’ve got to resign yourself to the fact that you’ve got to grind it out and stick to a plan. I got a little too overzealous the first couple of weeks and wanted to put too much action on the board. But I’ve made some adjustments that will get this ship going in the right direction.”

The $ 1 Million SuperiorBook Sports Betting Challenge is a simulation which is being conducted for promotional and educational purposes. Toward that end, Jay is keeping a regular diary of his progress, analyzing why he won or lost and in general taking the reader through the trials and tribulations of a serious sports handicapper.

SuperiorBook (http://www.superiorbook.com) is home of the WagerCart, a state-of-the-art facilitation system that makes online wagering as easy as taking a trip through a shopping cart. “The WagerCart is a terrific piece of technology,” says Jay. “I’m not sure I could make a lot of these plays so easily without it, especially as many of them are made right before game time. But I just go zip-zip-zip, and before you know it, I’m done.”

SuperiorBook is also sponsor of the SuperiorBook World Sports Handicapping Championship, a season-long tournament that allows handicappers to compete against each other for weekly prizes and a seat in the Grand Finale, which will take place over the Super Bowl weekend. To the winner goes $ 20,000 and a championship belt. All that is necessary to enter the World Sports Handicapping Championship is to visit SuperiorBook.net (http://www.superiorbook.net), the online betting school that is SuperiorBook’s sister site, and register. You’ll receive $ 1000 in play money and the weekly newsletter which contains plenty of useful information for the sports handicapper, including sports betting tips by Charles Jay and excerpts from his Challenge Diary.

For further information, please visit SuperiorBook (http://www.superiorbook.com).

About SuperiorBook:

SuperiorBook calls itself “The Easiest Sports Bet on the Net,” with lightning fast payouts, year-round deposit bonuses, state of the art technology with a revolutionary interface. There is no minimum bet, and its WagerCart certainly makes it the easiest place to play, for the novice, internediate and advanced “sportsman.” Live support is available 24 hours a day, and multiple instructional features make it the most user-friendly destination for the new customer. MyDavinci.com Collaborates with the Minnesota Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy in Creating the Perfect Charity Auction

Lake Zurich, IL (PRWEB) November 19, 2006

For years people have been coming up with inventive ways to raise charity funds. Be it candy sales or casino nights, walkathons or sport outings, everyone has, in one way or another, participated in a fundraiser.

MyDavinci.com is a company seasoned in the art of making fundraisers original and fun. MyDavinci paves its way working with people by creating memorable, personalized artworks for its customers. So it’s no wonder that MyDavinci has gone through great lengths to help create a unique fundraiser for the Minnesota Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease that severely deteriorates nerve cells which control the patient’s muscles, often rendering them unable to perform basic motor skills such as walking, crawling, neck control, and even breathing and swallowing properly. Although SMA in newborns is fatal there are many children and adults with SMA who are living and functioning with the hope that someday doctors may find a cure for their disease. Because 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers of SMA and it is the #1 genetic killer of children under the age of two, it is important for the Families of SMA to raise public awareness about this devastating disease.

MyDavinci.com became involved when they were contacted by Pat Reis in regards to the 2006 KFAN Superstar’s Golf Classic & Party, a fundraiser in support of Families of SMA. The funds raised would go towards SMA research and a national campaign to promote awareness about this disease. Head of the MyDavinci.com marketing department, Cheryl Black, enthusiastically took this special project under her wing and with the aid of Sue West from the Families of SMA, created wonderfully unique artworks to be displayed and auctioned at the fundraiser party.

First, Black received a photo of the fundraiser’s featured children posing with Mike Morris, tournament host and former Minnesota Viking. Black decided that the photograph be set on a stretched canvas in the uniquely modern MyDavinci design called “Leonardo’s Pop”. The second artwork, under West’s instruction, was to be less specific and more symbolic of the precious lives of these courageous children. West sent over photos of two specific children and suggested an artwork of them holding a butterfly. Black decided that the art would be created with just the children’s hands holding a monarch butterfly. Black then combined photos using pictures of her own garden flowers, Asiatic lilies, for the background while guiding the art department on color placement. The end product was a beautiful “Davinci sketch” created by a MyDavinci artist using pencil and brilliant, red and magenta watercolor washes.

The folks back at MyDainci.com were proud to discover that the art work of the butterfly and lilies was auctioned off for more than twice the retail price would have been; it went for $ 550.00. However, they were not that surprised, they are used to the high regards in which customers hold their art. This is not the first time Mydavinci has had their hand in innovative fundraiser ideas. CEO and founder of MyDavinci.com, Dong Ouyang, explains “We are excited whenever we get to put together a special project like this, especially when it’s for such a good cause?.We’ve worked with other charities in the past, one in which became a partner, receiving our artworks at a discounted price. Then, the proceeds that they made in the sale of our products went to their charitable organization.”

FanChatter.com to Launch at MinneDemo

St. Paul, MN (PRWEB) October 10, 2007 -

Mobile sports fan chat utility FanChatter.com will announce its official launch at MinneDemo 2007, Minnesota’s foremost technology showcase event to be held at O’Gara’s Garage in St. Paul on Thursday, October 11th.

FanChatter allows users to talk sports and share photos with their friends from anywhere, anytime, all at once — via text messaging, mobile photo messaging, email, and web. Sports fans can use these platforms to post and receive chatter and participate in user-created sports chat groups.

“We’re excited to offer fans the ability to connect with each other whether they’re at the game, at the bar, at work, or anywhere in-between,” said FanChatter co-founder Marty Wetherall. “Our mobile feature alerts you when one of your friends is talking sports and lets you chatter back and forth from your phone or email.”

FanChatter users activate their mobile device(s) and add their friends on the site to their “Lineup.” Any chatter from a user’s Lineup is forwarded to their mobile device, and they can also choose to receive group chatter alerts. Lineup and group alerts can be turned on or off anytime from their mobile device or from the FanChatter.com site.

A modern mobile update of traditional sports forums and message boards, FanChatter.com is live and 100% functional following three months of testing. During that time fans have chattered from the NBA Draft in New York City, a kayak in San Francisco’s McCovey Cove during the MLB Home Run Derby, numerous Minnesota sporting events, and recently the Chicago Cubs’ Game 3 playoff loss at Wrigley Field.

Now MinneDemo will host an introductory demonstration of the FanChatter utility.

“MinneDemo gives us a unique chance to walk through our functionality before an audience of our peers,” said Wetherall. “There’s so much exciting development work being done right now in Minnesota. We feel honored to be presenting.”

MinneDemo (http://minnedemo.org/) is Minnesota’s version of BarCamp, an international network of open, participatory workshop events often focusing on early-stage web applications. Organized locally by tech entrepreneur Dan Grigsby and developer Luke Francl, MinneDemo 2007 is sponsored by Upper Midwest businesses Kinetic Data, Split Rock Partners, New Counsel PLC, ipHouse, and Electric Pulp. FanChatter is one of six scheduled 15-minute demonstrations. Other presenters include CrashPlan, SotaComm, WonderFile, Pokeware, and Adaptive Avenue.

Following their formal debut at MinneDemo, FanChatter plans to quickly grow their user base while continuing to develop new sports fan communication tools, such as the recently added photo sharing feature and RSS feeds that allow chatter to stream through outside news readers, blogs, and other web applications. They also plan to attract advertisers by offering innovative sports fan targeting and messaging capabilities.
