The Urban Vanguarde Award is given to individuals who have impacted their communities in a positive way. This years recipients will be:
Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (46-2-1, 32 KOs)
The Urban Vanguarde award Hopkins the undisputed International Boxing Federation middleweight champion, World Boxing Council middleweight champion, World Boxing Association middleweight champion, and World Boxing Organization middleweight champion, “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins has completed a lifelong mission in realizing the two most important goals of his boxing career: ascending to become a world champion and becoming the first middleweight champion from his hometown of Philadelphia.
Hopkins is a tough-as-nails street-wise fighter who garnered many of his skills by grappling with other youths in the neighborhood. His teachers told him he wouldn’t live to be eighteen. At seventeen, he was facing up to eighteen years in prison.
“I’d been in court 30 times in two years,” Hopkins said. “I never stole anything from a woman, and I never used a weapon. The truth is, I had to go to court to be saved from the graveyard.” He added, “I’m not happy about the things I did back then, but the way I turned my life around speaks for itself.”
Hopkins spent nearly five years, from 1984 through 1989, at Graterford Penitentiary in Pennsylvania. “I haven’t spit on the sidewalk since then,” he said.
Michael Mauldin Entertainment Mogul
When it comes to molding platinum-selling recording artists or designing sold-out nationwide concert tours or connecting brands to the urban market, Michael Mauldin has the Midas touch. With over 30 years in the entertainment industry, modesty still exudes from this living legend often known simply as Jermaine Dupris dad.
While fatherhood is perhaps the most visible of his accomplishments, Mauldin, currently CEO of Artistic Control Group and President of Mauldin Brand Agency has also served as COO of So So Def Recordings, Inc. and has earned a steady reputation for developing star talent and delivering the urban brand.
From 1995 until January 1999, Mauldin, the only African American to ever hold the title of President in the history of Columbia Records, quickly embarked on an effort to redesign the Black Music Division, where most of the staff came from a marketing and promotions background. As President, Mauldin signed off on superstar acts like The Fugees, Nas, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Cypress Hill, Kenny Lattimore, Destiny’s Child, Jagged Edge, Lil Bow Wow and an unknown 16-year-old prodigy he named Alicia Keys.
He most recently established Hip Hop 4 Humanity (HH4H), a 501(c)(3) corporation. The mission for HH4H is to improve the lives of people in need by mobilizing the consciousness of the Hip Hop community.
HH4H will continue to operate as a clearinghouse for philanthropic activities by having an association with the R&B, Hip Hop and Urban communities throughout the world. In 2004 the Emory University Goizueta Business School and Rollins School of Public Health honored Michael Mauldin and HH4H with the MLK Community Service Award:
Innovation for Change. The event will be hosted at Bungalow VII located at 111 Cotton Street in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia (215) 482-3102. The donation in advance is $ 20.
