Sports Stars Team With Positive Coaching Alliance For National Youth Sports Awards on March 17 at Stanford University

Stanford, CA (PRWEB) March 15, 2004

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), recognized as the leader in youth sports training, will team with sports celebrities to honor coaches and organizations that have made a difference in the lives of young athletes at the 3rd Annual National Youth Sports Awards Dinner at Stanford University on Wednesday, March 17, 2004.

Highlighting the evening will be Herm Edwards, head coach of the New York Jets; Ronnie Lott, NFL Hall of Fame; Alexi Lalas, president of the San Jose Earthquakes; Kerri Strug, US Olympic Gold Medal Gymnast; Jennifer Azzi, US Olympic Gold Medal Basketball; and ESPN’s Tom Farrey. Phil Jackson, PCA’s national spokesman and head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers; Barry Zito, Cy Young winner and Oakland A’s pitcher; Larry Brown, head coach of the Detroit Pistons, and Tony Granato, head coach of the Colorado Avalanche will present remarks via video, due to their respective schedules.

According to Phil Jackson, “coaching is really about the ‘heart’ one gives to his or her team. We need coaches who want to convey more than just the fundamentals of the game; who want to teach about character,” says Jackson. “This year’s award winners are teaching athletes to respect each other and honor the game. I applaud their efforts, and hope that coaches and organizations around the country will model the example they’ve set.”

“This year’s winners are inspiring examples of what youth sports in America can be,” said Jim Thompson, founder of PCA. “Although these coaches and organizations win a lot, they never sacrifice the larger goal of building character in the kids they coach. They are creating a culture that allows kids to truly flourish. Every young athlete deserves coaches and organizations like these.”

Hundreds of nominations were received by PCA from throughout the country. The criteria for coaches emphasize their success as a Double-Goal Coach – one who wants to win but also has the important goal of using sports to teach life lessons and positive character traits. Youth Sports Organizations were assessed in terms of their establishment of a long-term organizational culture of positive coaching and a reputation as a fun place to play.

A selection committee of three NCAA coaches, whose teams have qualified for more than 30 NCAA appearances, picked the winning coaches. A committee of youth sports coaches and business executives selected the winning youth sports organizations.

US Lacrosse will receive the National Leadership Award because they provide such a positive coaching model. They run a grant program, feature at least one article giving coaches, parents, leaders, and players tools To Honor The Game in every issue of Lacrosse Magazine, and has made major strides with their youth rules, giving coaches specific guidelines. US Lacrosse became PCA’s first National Partner four years ago.

The following Double-Goal Coaches will be honored:

Orange County Choppers

Motorcycle Mania

Motorcycles have always been the hot and cool mode of transporting for people across the American landscape, just check out any number of Elvis photos for proof of that fact. But these days motorcycles are right up there with Orlando Bloom on the popularity slide rule. Part of this resurgence has been fueled but a glut of new TV shows depicting the custom chopper bike subculture.

West Coast Choppers Vs. Orange County Choppers

First emerged the California custom bike shop, West Coast Choppers, and owner Jesse James when the Discovery Channel featured them in a show called “Motorcycle Mania”. Soon they had their own show called, “Monster Garage”. The ratings went out the window and Discovery knew they had unearthed a wellspring waiting to be tapped, but that was nothing compared to the follow up show called, “American Chopper”.

American Chopper

West Coast Choppers is based in California and you might naturally think the same of ORANGE COUNTY CHOPPERS, but the Hudson Valley plays host to its very own county with the famous Los Angeles area name. The shop and the show is based in Orange County, New York in the town of Rock Tavern, about 80 miles from New York City. Discovery soon gave the fine folks at Orange County Ironworks, their very own show called, “American Chopper”.

Orange County Chopper

“American Chopper” first aired on Discovery in September 2002 and quickly outpaced its predecessor, gaining twice the popularity right off the line. Orange County Choppers fame has spread like wildfire and you can see them on the cover of various magazines including, American Iron, the French mag – Freeway, the Norway publication – Biker Journal and the ever-popular Street Chopper.

Paul Teutul Sr.

Great American films like “Easy Rider” and Marlon Brando’s “The Wild One” have inspired many to hop on the back of a hog or two, Paul Teutul Sr. was no exception. Having grown his Orange County Ironworks into a successful business he was able to utilize his downtime to create the custom bikes of Orange County Choppers. They debuted their first bike at Daytona Bike Oktoberfest 1999. The creation was dubbed, “True Blue”, and was built in Paul’s basement.

My Three Sons

Now more than 4 years later, Orange County Choppers has grown into what “American Iron” recognizes as one of the world’s top 12 builders. Much of their success is due in a great part to Paul’s three sons. Danny, 26, is the general manager of Orange County Ironworks, Paul Jr., 28, is the chief designer and fabricator of Orange County Choppers and 24 year old, Michael, answers phones and orders parts for the Chopper division. His 21-year-old daughter, Kristin, is not currently directly involved and is attending nursing school in Rochester, New York.

Jet Bike

One of the OCC’s greatest achievements has been the “Jet Bike”. The bike was inspired by the design of Navy aircraft carriers and was intended to honor the troops in Afghanistan. The Jet Bike’s colossal creation was chronicled in the very first show for “American Chopper” in September 2002. And just like Rome, the “Jet Bike” was not built in a day, in fact its birth took a grueling 42 days from start to finish.

Spider Bike

Their custom chopper, the “Spider Bike” was one of only three bikes chosen in the world-class competition at the Rats Hole Custom Show in Daytona, Florida. That accolade gained them an all expenses paid trip to Germany to the site of one of the biggest auto and bike shows in the world. The “Spider Bike” was later purchased by musician Wyclef Jean of the Fugees.

Reality Show Drama?

Orange County Choppers is a family affair and thus already has built-in drama and tension from every day life, but the “American Chopper” producers decided to mix it up a bit by suggesting that the youngest son, Michael, be added to OCC roster and thus bring a bit more drama to the show. You see, Michael has a had a long history of not being able to handle his jobs and prefers the crazier parts of being a guy in his early 20’s. Just see the show and see for yourself.

Author of “Raising Cole” Begins Book Signing Tour

(PRWEB) November 23, 2004

Just in time for the holiday Season, Marc Pittman author of “Raising Cole Developing Life’s Greatest Relationship, Embracing Life’s Greatest Tragedy – A father’s Story” spreads a hopeful message in a series of book signing appearances beginning at the end of November.

“A must read…Marc Pittman crosses the boundary and stigma of the tough guy and shows that while being very tough, you can also be very compassionate. This book will make you appreciate not every hour, but every second you spend with someone you love.”

-Mark Gastineau, former Pro Bowl defensive end, New York Jets

Marc Pittman was one of 16 children of a dirt-poor farmer who remains to this day the only man to knock him unconscious. As a young man, he survived being hit by a van and having a 250-pound scaffolding fall five stories onto him. He’s wrestled bears and swam with 12-foot alligators. On the night before his wedding, he got in a bar fight that ended with his soon-to-be brother-in-law in the hospital.

But when he had a son, he became the father he had always wanted. When seven-year-old Cole asked him about beer, Marc Pittman put down his can and never drank again. He told his boys everything, and they were honest with him in return. They unburdened their fears; told him their dreams; and even admitted their sins. Despite the fact that his sons were star football players, they felt no shame in holding their father’s hand in public. People told him he was lucky to have the relationship he did with this children, but Marc Pittman knew the truth-it wasn’t luck, he worked at it every day.

And then his eldest son, Cole, was killed in a traffic accident on the way to football practice at the University of Texas.

Raising Cole: Developing Life’s Greatest Relationship, Embracing Life’s Greatest Tragedy ($ 10.95 – HCI Books, May 2004) tells not only of how Marc Pittman dealt with the tragic loss of his beloved son, but of the 21 years he lived with Cole and the lessons he learned about being a good father, a good friend, and a good man. It is a story about fatherhood, love, respect, and about the simple, honest ways to create all three.

“Initially [I wrote this book] to honor my son who I had lost to a tragic traffic accident. But it became much more than that. As I poured my heart out on paper I began to understand that if we would apply the same passion to every aspect of our lives as I did being a father, then this world would certainly be a much better place. Success is not the number of toys or the amount of money we have when we die. Success to me is the number of people we have touched in a positive way while we are here on earth. It would take only one reader to grasp the true meaning of the book for me to consider the book a success, because that one person, who might even be you, could make a difference in numerous people¹s lives.” Marc replied when asked about his reasons for writing this book.

Leonard Marshall Talks Kids, Camp, and Community

(PRWEB) March 31, 2005

Super Bowl champion, Leonard Marshall, has a keen eye for wise investments. His latest investment is in the lives of kids from his local community through a new effort called the Leonard Marshall Football Academy.

Leonard Marshall has 3 Pro Bowl and 2 Super Bowl Championships under his belt in an illustrious 13-year career as an NFL defensive lineman for the New York Giants, New York Jets and Washington Redskins. After retiring from football in 1996, Mr. Marshall planted his roots in Boca Raton, Florida, where he is a successful entrepreneur and CEO of Capital Source Mortgage. It is in his local community of Boca Raton where, on June 6th, 2005, the Leonard Marshall Football Academy will open its doors to welcome the kids of South Florida.

The camp is geared toward football players of beginner, intermediate or advanced skills, ages 8-18, who are driven to learn or advance their game. Current and former NFL players and coaches, respected local high school football coaches and Leonard, himself, will be on hand each day to coach the kids through proven NFL techniques. “I’m proud to be a part of this camp and to be working with such a dedicated person like Leonard Marshall,” said West Boca High School football coach, Willie Dodaro. Also confirmed to participate is former NFL head coach for the Patriots and Giants, Ron Erhardt. “Ron is responsible for mentoring several NFL players, including quarter back, Phil Simms, among many others. This is a huge score for us,” says Marshall.

Located on the grounds of West Boca Community High School, this day camp offers three, one-week camps, each to include lunch and a variety of non-contact activities such as; specialty clinics, scrimmages, daily instructional sessions taught by NFL Pros, and daily seminars. There will also be fun activities like photo and autograph sessions, guest speakers, a post camp review seminar with awards and certificates, and much more. Camp sessions will begin with Session #1, June 6–10, Session #2, June 13–17, and Session #3, June 20–24. A limited number of fully underwritten camp scholarships will be available for those who qualify. Visit http://www.leonardmarshallfootballacademy.com for camp details.

“Some of my NFL buddies will be here with me, including Amani Toomer, Michael Strahan, Tiki Barber, Carl Banks, Ottis Anderson, Joe Morris, Mark Bavaro, Marvin Jones, Jason Taylor and many more. It’s sure to be a fun three weeks for all of us,” says Leonard. Each camp session will culminate with a special awards ceremony to which all camp attendees, along with their parents or guardians, will be invited to lunch with Leonard, camp sponsors, coaches and famous NFL players.

“I came from little, but I had passion and enthusiasm for life and learning. That, combined with strong family values, hard work, determination, and mentoring, helped to make my dreams come true. Now, it’s time for me to cultivate the dreams of kids, and I fully intend to do that through the Leonard Marshall Football Academy. I personally promise to help make your child a better athlete and a more grounded person.”

“After all, it’s all about the kids,” says Marshall. “Why dream the dream…when you can live it?”

Increase Lung Capacity by 600% with a Simple Five-Minute Exercise

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 3, 2005

Studies show that a normal person uses less than one-sixth of his lung capacity, breathing in only a pint (500 mL) of air in every breath, while average lungs could hold up to 5800 mL of air. This means that the unused portions of the lungs are inactive, containing stagnant air.

Although the lungs are forced to intake more air during exercise, the breathing quickly returns to normal after the exercise. However, if a person can constantly breathe in more air, the health benefits would prove to be endless.

Former New York Jets Wide Receiver, Johnny ?Lam? Jones says, ?the breathing exercises are great for improving your cardiovascular? If the athlete will combine Master Lu?s training with his individual sport, I believe without a doubt, he will gain that extra edge that increases his chance of winning the battle in any sport.?

Eastern philosophy believes good health comes from a balanced body, because every part of us is interconnected. The cardiovascular system cannot carry out its duties for the body unless the pulmonary (lungs) system contributes its share faithfully. The combined system with the heart and lungs working is already commonly identified as the cardiopulmonary system. The heart then affects other internal functions, and so on. Only a breathing method is able to take advantage of a person?s only half voluntary internal organ to closely influence other internal workings of the entire body. Respiratory specialists believe that many internal ailments can easily be prevented if a person simply used 1/3 of his lung capacity. Using over 2/3 is believed to reverse various long-term health problems. Unfortunately, there has never been a way to consistently increase an individual?s active lung capacity to such a degree, until now.

?Chi Kung? is the practice of cultivating Chi, often translated as air, energy, or the source of life. Unfortunately, most Chi Kung practices we see today are much beyond our understanding. Practicing Chi Kung usually involves many complex methods in attempt to control chi within inner organs, which people simply cannot do without the right training. Master James Lu realized this obstacle in his early practices and came up with a simple solution. He thought, ?if it?s so difficult to control where the Chi goes, why not begin by absorbing more chi; enough to overflow throughout body.? With that in mind, Master Lu spent years of researching and learning different forms of Chi Kung, Yoga, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, and every martial art to be thought of. His resources also included ancient scrolls and history books uncovered in the most remote areas of Mainland China. The result is Master Lu?s 8-Step Lift Up Series, created for today?s modern society and environment. Exercises are short, intensive, easy to learn, and immediately effective.

The first step: The Five Elements Breathing Program, is now available on DVD at masterlu.com. Master Lu says, ?You will experience 90% of the benefits of my 8-step series just by learning step one.? Following steps includes exercises focused on joint strengthening, energy cultivation, improving meridian flow, internal / external physical impact endurance, speed, sexual energy, and biological energy transference. Although there are only a handful of people in the world with such knowledge and ability, Master Lu believes everyone should learn them to improve their quality and duration of life.

NFL Draft Website is Set to Launch for Public

(PRWEB) April 28, 2006

The NFL Draft is an annual sports draft in which National Football League (NFL) teams take turns selecting ‘amateur’ college American football players and other first-time eligible players.

The first professional football draft was held February 8, 1936, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia. The first player taken was Jay Berwanger, of the University of Chicago, by the Philadelphia Eagles, who subsequently traded his rights to the Chicago Bears. Interestingly, even though Berwanger also was the first recipient of the Heisman Trophy, the halfback chose never to play in the NFL. Also, for anyone looking to win a bar bet, Riley Smith of the University of Alabama, who was chosen second overall by the Boston Redskins, became the first drafted player to actually play in the NFL.

Originally, it was a low-key affair, for which teams prepared little. Over the years, scouting for the draft has grown to be a complicated pseudo-science, in which teams use workout data from prospects, interviews, game films and projections of skills as players mature to decide which college players are the best in the country.

In the 1980s, cable sports channel ESPN began televising the draft, which led to an increase in its popularity. Now, notable “draftniks” like ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., Ourlads Scouting Service, and Springfield Draft Publications work year-round on studying and projecting where players will end up in the draft and which teams will select them. For a detailed projection of possible first round picks, you can go to sites like [On The Clock Draft], and [NFL Draft Countdown], which have broken down team needs and conducted a mock draft based on those needs. Starting in 2006, the NFL Network also will cover the draft.

The NFL Draft has been in New York City since 1965 and has had to move into large venues as the event has gained in popularity, drawing fans from across the country who are looking for a reason to paint their faces in April. The 2006 draft will be held at Radio City Music Hall, the first time this venue has hosted the gala. Madison Square Garden had hosted the event for a number of years before moving to the Javits Convention Center in 2005 following a dispute with MSG management opposing a new stadium for the New York Jets.

Tickets are free, but long waits in line can be expected for fans hoping to get a live glimpse of their team’s high-profile picks… or to express their displeasure at their team picking the “wrong” guy. The current format consists of seven rounds. Each team is assigned a selection in each round, with the team with the worst record from the previous year being assigned the first pick in each round. The team with the second-worst record gets the second pick, and so on until the 32nd and last team (the team that won the Super Bowl) makes its selection. The first overall pick generally gets the richest contract, but other contracts rely on a number of variables. While they generally are based on the previous year’s second overall pick, third overall, etc., each player’s position also is taken into account. Quarterbacks, for example, usually command more money than offensive linemen, which can skew those dollar figures slightly.

Each team has its representatives attend the draft. During the draft, one team is always “on the clock”. In Round 1, teams have 15 minutes to make their choice. The decision time drops to 10 minutes in the second round and to 5 minutes in Rounds 3-7. If a team doesn’t make a decision within its allotted time, the team still can submit its selection at any time after its time is up, but the next team can pick before it, thus possibly stealing a player the late team may have been eyeing.

The NFL Draft has developed a phenomenon known as “Mr. Irrelevant”, which is the final player taken over the two-day event. This player actually receives some celebrity status, receiving a parade and even a Heisman Trophy lookalike, of a player fumbling a ball. Past “honorees” of the Mr. Irrelevant title.

NFL Draft Website is now available at nfl-mock-draft.com. Fans would surely love this site. It has a very good point of view on NFL Draft History.

Breathing Right Improves Health and Lifestyle

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 23, 2006

Let’s say you workout on a routine basis, you feel active, but you also know that professional athletes are physically worn out at a younger age, and don’t necessarily have better long-term health than those who exercise moderately. So how much exercise is too much? Is your exercise routine well-balanced?

You have the best medical care, and you take all the best known supplements, but you worry how everything interacts with your body.

Will it produce a negative side-effect? Will two supplements defeat the purpose of each other? Should you not take it when you feel good, or when you feel sick? Is your doctor really giving you the BEST advice?

At MASTERLU.COM we believe — When in doubt, go back to the basics! Make sure you are taking all the right steps from the very start. Improve the way you absorb and process the single most abundant resource you use everyday, your breath!

How could breathing make such a big difference?

First of all, a normal office worker only uses a sixth of his lung capacity. The remaining five-sixth of his lungs are either deflated or holding stagnant air. This greatly reduces the oxygenation of the blood — required for supporting all of our inner organs.

Clinical studies also show that an average person’s lung capacity begins to diminish shortly after puberty. That is if you don’t do anything to maintain or increase your active lung capacity.

By measure of lung function with a spirometer, we could lose UP TO 25% of our air intake capacity every 10 years. This could explain why people take more breaths per minute with increased age.

Do longer breaths give you a longer life? Taking a a look at the living creatures around us, we can see that animals taking shorter breaths tend to have a shorter life.

A dog, for instance, takes up to 30 breaths per minute, while an adult human only takes about 15-20 breaths. A turtle’s average respiratory rate could be as low as 1-2 a minute.

In comparison, the estimated life span of a turtle is 100 years, humans – 75 years, and 20 years for dogs. So it seems the quality and depth of the breath is in fact more important than the quantity (number of breaths taken) of breaths.

Of course respiratory rate is far from the only factor to determine longevity, but it can definitely help contribute to a significantly increased life span.

Here is what Johnny “Lam” Jones, former NFL New York Jets Player, had to say about Master Lu’s Five Elements Breathing Method:

“The breathing exercises are great for improving your cardiovascular [system], and the strength and speed exercises are great for building and maintaining strength without losing flexibility. If the athlete will combine the training with his individual sport training, I believe without a doubt, he will gain that extra edge that increases his chances of winning the battle in any sport. The greatest thing about this training method is that it’s not just for the young or athletic, anyone can do the exercises! It’s for those who care about their physical health on a long term basis.”

Week Four NFL Line Moves at PinnacleSports.com

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 27, 2006

Every Sunday, PinnacleSports.com is one of the first sportsbooks in the world to post betting lines on the following week?s NFL games, giving players the opportunity to bet nearly a full week in advance of kickoff. Expert handicappers and sharp sports bettors regularly place wagers on these early lines before the oddsmakers have a chance to ?sharpen? the point spreads. Early betting by these professionals and skilled handicappers gives unique insight into how the games will play out each week and now PinnacleSports.com is letting you know which teams the sharp bettors are backing this weekend.

The largest sports betting site on the Internet, PinnacleSports.com opened betting on every game in week 4 of the NFL regular season before week three?s games had even finished. Pinnacle Sports has already received tremendous volume on this weekend?s games and the oddsmakers have adjusted the point spreads accordingly as early bettors took positions on several match-ups, including:

Indianapolis @ New York Jets

The Colts opened as 7.5-point favorites at PinnacleSports.com, and after early sharp action, the line now stands at Indy -9. The sportsbook has received nearly two times as many bets on the Colts versus the host Jets.

Dallas @ Tennessee

There?s been a lot of early action on this game with nearly three times as many bets on Dallas coming off the bye week. The point spread opened at Cowboys -7 (-104), but early betting has moved the line to Dallas -9.5 (-106). If this trend continues throughout the week, it wouldn?t be shocking to see Dallas as double-digit road favorites.

Cleveland @ Oakland

In a battle of winless teams, early bettors have jumped on the Browns bandwagon following their near upset of Baltimore. Pinnacle Sportsbook opened Cleveland as a 1-point road favorites, but a flurry of sharp action has moved the line to Browns -3 (+109).

Jacksonville @ Washington

In a week full of road favorites, Pinnaclesports.com opened the line with Jacksonville listed at -2.5 (-104). Nearly four times as many bets have been placed on the Jaguars to date, but the line has only moved seven cents to -2.5 (-111) mainly because there?s opposition from sharp bettors who like Washington as home underdogs.

New England @ Cincinnati

This game opened with the Bengals at -4 (-113) and early sharp action has moved the line to Cincinnati -6 (+102). After the Patriots home loss to Denver Sunday night, Pinnacle Sports Book has seen bets on Cincinnati come in at a rate of 4

Schutt Sports Begins Shipping All-New AiR XP? Football Helmets

Litchfield, IL (PRWEB) May 19, 2008

Excited football players across the country will soon be getting their hands on one of the most anticipated new helmets in years – the AiR XP? from Schutt Sports. The company has already begun shipping XPs, and teams across the country are putting them on their players as fast as they get them.

Many college and pro teams have already had the chance to get some playing time in the new AiR XP? Helmets. Gus Granneman, Equipment Director for the New York Jets, got his hands on his set of AiR XP? helmets a couple of weeks ago.

“We received our AiR XP? helmets from Schutt in time for us to fit them on players for our first mini camp,” said Granneman. “The players that are using the AiR XP? are very pleased with the comfort, fit and performance of the helmet.”

Schutt Sports rocked the football helmet industry by introducing two new helmets within the last seven months. The ION4D is a large standoff helmet that uses TPU Cushioning in the form of SKYDEX2
