African-American Artist, Woodrow Nash, Creates Art for Celebrities, Everyday People Alike

Hudson, OH (PRWEB) October 24, 2005

Woodrow Nash has always wanted one thing in life: to create art. For more than 30 years, the talented sculptor has gotten his wish. He is able to spend his days working on his amazingly lifelike works of art and, as an added bonus, his creations are collected internationally by celebrities, athletes and working professionals alike.

His signature style, which he has affectionately coined African Nouveau, combines 15th century Benin and 18th century French Nouveau characteristics into a stunning fusion of realistic lines and curves.

?My style is my own,? Nash said. ?It comes from my passion to create realism in sculpting the human form.?

Whether he uses stoneware, earthenware, terracotta or porcelain, Nash?s sculptures reflect a unique style that attracts buyers from all walks of life. But, at an investment often in the range of $ 10,000 to $ 20,000 for the life-size pieces, many buyers include professional athletes, musical stars and Hollywood actors.

Nash?s pieces, combining his style and vision of the human form, have become favorite collector?s items in many million-dollar homes. With trends leaning toward flowing lines and unique materials, Nash?s pieces are a perfect complement to the expertly designed homes of the stars. Celebrities and athletes flock to buy Woodrow Nash pieces, among them Katie Couric, Tina Knowles and Smokey Robinson.

Nash is also a favorite among interior designers around the nation who use his art as focal points throughout homes that they decorate.

?I personally feel that each individual piece has its own character and is both original and unique,? said Stephanie Gowdy, an interior designer based out of Atlanta. ?My clients like pieces that are ?different? and Woodrow?s sculptures always make a statement.?

Gowdy?s clients include pro-athletes such as Ashley Ambrose of the New Orleans Saints, Ken ?The Hammer? Hamlin with the Seattle Seahawks and Ray Buchanan of the Oakland Raiders.

?Ken Hamlin gave me control of the project while he was on the road, and when I told him that I had found a piece that would remind him of himself, he was skeptical,? Gowdy reminisces. ?When he saw Woodrow?s sculpture, he jumped across the room with a huge smile on his face. He kept rubbing the piece because it seemed so real.?

Aside from their value as conversation pieces, Nash?s work is collectible ? something Gowdy knows firsthand.

?I own four pieces of Woodrow?s work,? Gowdy said. ?When my daughters graduated college and got their own places, I gave each of them a Woodrow Nash piece to start their collections.?

In addition to his celebrity clients, working professionals have long been admirers of Nash?s work. Whether it?s an account executive from Arizona or an engineer from the East Coast, businesspeople flock to buy Nash?s startling lifelike pieces of art.

Jim Perkins, a retired business executive from Memphis, Tennessee, has purchased nine pieces from Nash over the past four years.

?My wife and I buy art that we can relate to and feel,? Perkins said. ?Woodrow?s art captures and retains a personality, an attitude, a certain air.?

The chance to work with the likes of Robinson and Knowles didn?t happen overnight. Nash pulls his talents from years of experience in a variety of art forms. Beginning his career as a freelance artist in Akron, Ohio, Nash worked as an illustrator and painted murals for local institutions.

Nash moved to New York in 1975 to work as a fashion illustrator, where he also spent time designing and illustrating record albums for inner city labels that represented jazz legends such as Father Hines, Cat Anderson and Arnett Cobbs.

After years as a technical illustrator with Goodyear and a stint in Cleveland with American Greetings, Nash moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked as a graphic artist. In 2002, Nash opened The Rage Gallery ? a life long dream of his. Located in downtown Akron, Ohio, Nash?s hometown, The Rage Gallery houses his studio in addition to 2,000 square feet of gallery space.

?The Gallery lets me share my work with the people of this community, not just people all over the country,? Nash said. ?I?ve always felt connected to Akron, so I never even considered opening my gallery anywhere else.

?Akron helped shape who I am and the pieces that I create, so this is a chance for me to give back to the community and share my love of art and the human form,? Nash continued.

Nash?s studio and gallery space are extensions of himself and his work. In his office area, books filled with photos of African art rest on shelves alongside a variety of plaques he has been awarded for his contributions to the art world. His entire studio space is lightly covered with a fine layer of dust that settles atop half painted vases and molds of African warriors.

The gallery itself is stunning in its display of incredible sculptures of men, women and children in a variety of poses and dress. The attention to intricate detail and the haunting realism of each piece is a tribute to Nash?s vision and creativity.

Whether it?s a businessman in Akron or a Grammy Award winner in California, Woodrow Nash?s sculptures offer a unique accent to complement every person?s individual taste.

Sports Enthusiasts Launch of Million Fan Challenge Marketing Website To Benefit Children?s Hospitals in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) October 8, 2005

This marketing venture is a chance for your website to be viewed by millions of football fans everyday accompanied by virtually unlimited growth potential. The challenge is to bring together a million football fans while promoting businesses and services worldwide. With its structured worldwide ad campaign, it?s destined to be a top ranked site for the sports/football community with its wide appeal.

A New Wave of Marketing has hit the internet called Micro Ads (pixel advertising). Imagine a webpage full of your team?s supporters from businesses to loyal fans all across the world bringing the love. This is a great marketing place for businesses no doubt but you can?t forget the tailgaters who would want to post pictures of the pre game fun or the big bowl day festivities or a blog of a kid who dreams of one day playing pro. This is a website for the fans to make there mark and show they are loyal to there team, win or lose. The micro ads you buy on the website could end up being worth an astounding amount of money in sales in a short amount of time. Cleverly placed ads and size will increase traffic to your website.

We have three teams in our challenge?.2005 AFC South Division Champions Indianapolis Colts, Super Bowl XL Champions Pittsburgh Steelers and 2005 NFC Conference Champions Seattle Seahawks. Simply choose your favorite team and get linked to your website. For as little as $ 10, you will become a part of history and your ad will be placed for a period of 5 years. That?s only $ 2 per year. A portion of revenue generated through The Million Fan Challenge to be donated to Riley Hospital of Indianapolis, IN, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center of Seattle, WA and Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh, PA.

What is Micro Ads? -

What you see on your computer screen every day is millions of little dots that make up the letter, words and images on your screen. Each one of these dots is called a pixel. The average letter will fit into about a 10×10 square of pixels. These pixels are available to post your ad and

The pixels are available in 100-pixel ‘blocks’ (each measuring 10×10 pixels). The homepage is divided into 12,000 of these 100-pixel blocks (for a total of 1,200,000 pixels). The reason for selling them in 100-pixel blocks is because anything smaller would be too small to display anything effectively.

You can buy as many pixels as you like, as long as there are some available. When you buy some pixels, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice in the space you have purchased. You can also have the image click through to your own website. However, no obscene or offensive images are allowed or an image that link to any pornographic sites. These sites are strictly not allowed.

Our Lady of the Valley School competing in National Science Olympiad Competition

(PRWEB) May 22, 2004

Local students to participate in 2004 National Science Olympiad held at Juniata College May 21 and May 22.

A team of scientifically minded students from Our Lady of the Valley School in Birmingham, Alabama, will compete against teams from across the country at the 2004 Science Olympiad Tournament May 21 and 22 at Juniata College, a small liberal arts college in Huntingdon, Pa. Juniata, which has an undergraduate enrollment of 1,350, is the smallest college ever to host the national tournament.

The Our Lady of the Valley students are coached by Ann Stevens, a Science teacher at the school. This is the first time that Our Lady of the Valley School has competed in the national tournament, although it has had a consistent record of excellence in the state regional competitions and performed well in the state competition for several years. Competing with 23 teams in the regional competition in Tuscaloosa in February, 2004, the school’s “Blue” and “Gray” teams finished 1st and 2nd overall, qualifying both for state competition, where the school qualified for national competition to represent the State of Alabama for the first time ever.

Thirty-nine students traveled to Montgomery for State Competition. The team members were:

Captain -Greg Stewart, Co-Captain – Sarah Calcatera, Co-Captain Trey DelGreco, Landi Drake Wallace, Jeff Tapley, Kevin Swimelar, Claire Cooper, Justin Bunn, Rebecca Thompson, Barton Lee, Mark Slovensky, JohnWilson, Donna Ferretti, Blaine Davis, Erin Stauss, Christine Thornton, Chris Borgosz, Kim DiChiara, Paul Wilson and Anna Krueger.

Co-Captain Mark Ledbetter, Co-Captain Adam McDermot, Aaron Corneil, Tommy Seifert, Anne-Marie Urrutia, Eric Stone, Meredith Hubbard, Joey Harkins, Stephanie Wilcox, Matt Outlaw, Adam Zahorschak, Zac Martin, Lizzie Hoang, Patrick Marino, Kelly West, Lynn Fogel, George Allers, Frankie Romano and Griffin Just.

Co-sponsored by the National Science Olympiad, the event brings together the top teams from more than 40 separate state competitions. Each state will field teams of middle school- and high school-aged scientists to compete for two days in a variety of scientific events that are based on physics, chemistry, geology and a host of other science fields. Competitors are separated into two divisions: Division B (grades 6-9) and Division C (grades 9-12).

Juniata College has a long-standing and well-earned reputation for excellence in science. The college was rated 4th in the nation for the high number of science degrees granted as a percentage of the total degrees earned by Juniata undergraduates, according to Academic Excellence, a study of the role of research in the natural sciences at undergraduate institutions.

The opening ceremony and closing award presentations will be held in Knox Statdium, Juniata’s athletic field, named for Juniata alumnus Chuck Knox, former NFL head coach for the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks.

William Phillips, 1997 Nobel laureate in physics and a 1970 graduate of Juniata, will give the opening address at Knox Stadium to the participants at opening ceremonies Friday, May 21 at 5 p.m., followed by a parade of states by all participating teams. The Juniata campus also will feature an “Atomic Village” where student teams can relax and regroup between events.

Science Olympiad competitions ask students to apply the principles of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, problem-solving and technology to events that ask competitors to do everything from constructing a bridge to reconstructing a crime scene. The competition will start Saturday, May 22 at 8 a.m. at various locations around campus. The events, which end at 4 p.m., are based on the national and state scientific education standards.

The Science Olympiad brings out the talents, resourcefulness and skills of the top young scientific minds in the state as teams create different science projects for competition in 23 events. The events, which can involve individuals or teams, allow students to think creatively while building an elaborate project.

Events include Mission Possible, where students build Rube Goldberg-style devices to demonstrate scientific principles; Robo-Billiards; and Science Crime Busters, where students identify various substances in a simulated crime scene.

ASA To Host National Meeting on Autism Epidemic -July 7-10

BETHESDA, MD (PRWEB) July 3, 2004

Many of the country’s premier experts in autism will convene at a national conference in July to present the latest findings in autism spectrum disorders, the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States today. Topics to be covered at the Autism Society of America’s “35th Annual Conference on Autism Spectrum Disorders: Soaring to New Heights,” range from the latest theories on possible causes to educational and medical treatments to the newest test for diagnosing the disorder earlier in life, a key component to improving outcomes for those with autism.

The conference, which will be held in Seattle, WA, on July 7-10, 2004, includes more than 120 keynote, feature, and concurrent session speakers. Keynote speakers include: Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D. (University of Washington), who will overview some of the latest findings on brain development and early recognition of autism; Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D. (University of Kansas), who will talk on strategies for individuals with Asperger syndrome; Brian Iwata, Ph.D. (University of Florida), who will talk on learning and behaviors of individuals with autism, such as self-injurious behaviors (head-banging, eye-poking, biting); and Liane Holliday Willey, Ph.D., who will talk about her journey following her diagnosis with mild Asperger syndrome.

Other featured speakers include: Bryna Siegel, Ph.D. (University of California, San Francisco), who will talk about her newly-published early screening test for autism, which has been designed help professionals and non-professionals identify possible autism as early as 18 months of age; James Adams, Ph.D. (Arizona State University), who will provide an overview of the scientific data regarding the hypothesis that mercury poisoning is a possible cause of some cases of autism; and Soma Mukhopadhyay, a teacher and mother from India, who developed her own trademark teaching approach (the “Rapid Prompting Method”) to instruct her son Tito, who is now a published writer and poet, in spite of his severe autism.

Also on tap are a number of special events, including ASA’s “Evening of Champions” dinner to honor three unique heroes to the autism community – internationally-recognized researcher Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., CONVIO Web site founder Vinay Bhagat, and world-renowned drummer Charlie Adams (of the band “Yanni”), with special guest appearances expected by players from the Seattle SuperSonics, (Nick Collison and others), and the Seattle Seahawks.

Once thought to be a rare disorder, autism now affects an estimated 1 in 250 children in the nation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is growing at staggering rates. According to a chart released by ASA in April, while the number of children with disabilities in schools in total increased 28.4% over the school years 1991/92 to 2000/2001, the number of children with autism shot up 1,354% over the same 9-year period. That’s an average of more than 30% annually.

“Autism is at epidemic levels and is continuing to grow at staggering rates, and we still do not why,” Lee Grossman, Chairman of the Autism Society of America (ASA) Board of Directors, said. “It is our hope that this conference will help increase our understanding of autism and provide many of answers that healthcare professionals, educators, and parents need to better identify, treat, and support those affected by the disorder.”

“Autism currently costs the U.S. economy at estimated $ 90 billion a year, and, if current trends continue, we estimate that this will grow to $ 200-$ 400 billion within the next 10 years,” ASA President Rob Beck said. “It is therefore imperative that our country increase funding for research into the causes of autism, and that we significantly improve our efforts to identify and treat those affected by the disorder as early as possible. We know that early diagnosis results in early intervention which significantly improves the long-term outcomes for those affected by the disorder, increasing the odds that they will become active, contributing members of society.”

To learn more about the ASA national conference and the presentations scheduled to address these and many other important issues, please visit the conference portion of the ASA Web site (http://www.autism-society.org/conference), or contact Ronita Wisniewski, ASA’s Director of Communications by phone (301-657-0881, ext. 118) or e-mail (rwisniewski@autism-society.org).

About the Autism Society of America:

ASA is the oldest and largest grassroots organization within the autism community, with more than 200 chapters and over 50,000 members and supporters nationwide. ASA is the leading source of education, information and referral about autism and has been the leader in advocacy and legislation initiatives for more than three decades.

About Autism:

Autism is a brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate, to reason, and to interact with others. It is a spectrum disorder that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees of severity. Autism affects an estimated 1 in 250 individuals, or about 1.5 million Americans. It is four times more common in boys than girls, and it is found equally in all walks of life and in all populations around the world.
