Senator Patty Murray Puts 2,000 Jobs at Risk in State of Washington

The latest government reports show 4.2 million jobs were lost in 2009, the most in one year since the government started tracking payrolls in 1939. 2,000 employees of the 106 private-sector bus companies with authority to operate in the State of Washington are now at risk of being added to that statistic. This prospect comes courtesy of an amendment Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) placed in the recent Department of Transportation appropriations bill that exempts King County Metro Transit in the state of Washington from the charter rule they agreed to abide by when they accepted federal funds. Under the charter rule, public transit agencies that are supported by taxpayer dollars are not allowed to operate shuttles if a private carrier is available and capable of performing the work.

The exemption afforded King County Metro Transit from the charter rule?the only authority in the nation exempted?means that Seattle area taxpayer dollars are now being used, without consent of the taxpayers, to provide parking lot shuttle services for Seattle Mariners baseball games, Seattle Seahawks football games, and other Seattle-area sporting and public events. ?In effect, taxpayer dollars are being used to underwrite pro sports,? commented Ken Presley, Vice President of Industry Relations for the United Motorcoach Association.

Not only are taxpayer dollars being abused, but the loss of work for Washington state private bus companies will impact the $ 140 million in total annual revenues they generate and the $ 14 million in business and occupation taxes they contribute annually.

The United Motorcoach Association (UMA), North America?s largest association for operators of motorcoach companies, and other industry trade groups are speaking out against the amendment and want to ensure the charter bus rule stays in place, and is enforced, to protect the interests of their members and their employees and taxpayers.

?For the most part, private bus companies do not receive public assistance and cannot compete with public transits that do. It is just that simple,? continued Presley. ?While the exemption may mean subsidized shuttle rides for sports fans, what it really represents is a devastating loss of jobs, lost capital investment potential, lost tax revenue for the Seattle community, and the abuse of taxpayers? dollars. All in a day?s work for Senator Murray.?

?It is difficult to believe Senator Murray has any credibility with the unemployment problem when she has single-handedly demonstrated disregard for the drivers.? Presley concludes, ?The City of Seattle and Washington State voters deserve better and should tell Senator Murray to reverse this harmful amendment; let team owners pay their own way and put these bus drivers back to work.?

?The consequences of this exemption are enormous,? states UMA?s President and CEO, Victor S. Parra. ?It casts a long shadow over the bus companies affected; harming these small businesses will eventually have a domino effect and harm the local economy overall. Senator Murray has ignored the best interests of her community and put on hold a law that is meant to protect jobs and protect taxpayers.?

To ensure Sen. Murray also hears the message from private carriers themselves, the UMA has reached out to its more than 900 operator members today urging them to contact Sen. Murray?s office directly to tell the Senator to reverse the amendment.

Corporate Social Responsibility at Artitudes

As a company Artitudes acknowledges and embraces its role as a responsible community leader and gives back to the community in a myriad of ways including serving lunch monthly at the Matt Talbot Center, a Seattle residential treatment program serving the homeless, addicted and mentally ill and donating $ 50,000 worth of services each year to Olive Crest. Five years ago Heuston and staffers began Artitudes In Action: Art Docent Campaign, providing art instruction to several local elementary school classrooms and it is for this program that they are a finalist in the ABAs.

Art instruction has been severely affected in by budget cuts in public schools and is usually one of the first subjects to be cut from the curriculum. Heuston saw the growing need and stepped up to create a program that would be mutually beneficial to schools and Artitudes. Artitudes partners with schools and works with them to select classes with the greatest need for art instruction. Employees then volunteer their time as art docents which gives them the opportunity to give back to the community with something they are passionate about ? art. Since the start of the program Artitudes has reached between 20-25 classrooms totaling more than 550 students.
