Beck Tapped to Join TeamUSA Football Roster

(PRWEB) July 24, 2005

TeamUSA Football Director, Rudy Wyland, announced today that the team has recruited Christopher Beck of Milford, MA to be part of the team roster for the August Sports Tours International Cup Tournament hosted by the Great Britain Bulldogs in Coventry, England. TeamUSA Football will be competing against Team Canada of Northern Ontario on August 24 and the Bulldogs on August 27.

Beck, a 1998 graduate of Hopkinton High School and former offensive tackle for the Hopkinton High School Hillers, is currently a full back/tight end of Cumberland’s Rhode Island Prowlers in the Eastern Football League. He also plays a defensive end and outside linebacker for the team. He was a tight end and a defensive end on the Eastern Football League’s 2004 Champion Marlboro Shamrocks last season. Beck was the eighth overall draft pick in the Atlantic Indoor Football League’s January 2005 draft. Beck attended the 2000 NFL Combine in New Jersey and was selected as an unrestricted free agent to the NFL’s Washington Redskins Football Camp in 2000. Beck is employed by Staples, Inc. in Bellingham, MA.

“Chris’s combination of size, quickness and experience is going to be a great benefit to TeamUSA,” Wyland said, “He’s a great addition to our defensive unit and we expect him to step in immediately and be a leader.” This will be TeamUSA’s second appearance in Europe after playing the Austrian Football League’s Graz Giants in Graz, Austria in May.

This is TeamUSA fifth’s visit to the UK and its second game against the GB Bulldogs who were defeated by TeamUSA in October, 2004 in a game played at Leicester, England. “I can’t imagine that Chris will see anything in our playbook or in the play of our two opponents that he hasn’t already experienced,” Wyland said in noting the team’s second game. The Bulldogs are a part of the British Collegiate American Football League (BCAFL).

Founded in 2002, and based in Arlington VA, Team USA Football is campaigning to be the American entry to the World Cup of American Football. The team is scheduled to play the Graz Giants and the Austrian Football League’s Tyrolean Raiders in Spring 2006. Other games are being negotiated between the New York Police Department, Turkish National and French National football teams.

Former Professional Sports Executive Launches Animal Attraction; Blends #1 Paid Online Content Category with $30 Billion Pet Industry

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) May 12, 2004

Animal Attraction, an online dating and special events community for pet lovers, will celebrate its official full-scale “launch” on Tuesday, May 18, 2004. The launch follows a two-month “Sneak Preview” period in which the company saw initial membership expectations shattered, with new members joining from all 50 United States.

The new company is the “pet” project of Dan Cohen, a former executive with the NFL’s Washington Redskins, the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals. Cohen’s former company, DC Consulting, recently helped broker the sale of an NBA and NHL franchise and raised more than $ 100 million in equity in an effort to bring major league baseball to the nation’s capitol.

“I attended a ‘Dog Happy Hour’ and was fascinated with how easily people interacted when there was a pet involved,” says Cohen. “That same week, a friend introduced me to an online dating site and, despite initially being extremely cynical, I decided to join and enjoyed the experience. I realized pretty quickly that there was a need for an online dating service that caters to people who share a love of, and appreciation for, pets.”

Cohen talked to scores of single adult pet owners of all ages, races, ethnicities and backgrounds as part of his research into the viability of the concept.

“I found that most pet owners consider their pets to be members of their family,” said Cohen. “They want their friends or romantic interests to feel the same way ~ so I set out to create a place where people who love pets can find and interact with others who share the same values and positive traits that seem to define pet lovers.”

Animal Attraction, based in Washington, D.C., combines the passion that drives the pet products and services market with the truly impressive growth of the online dating industry ~ producing a compelling offering to the nation’s 40 million single pet owners and the millions of other singles who for one reason or another are currently “without pet”.

According to the American Pet product Manufacturers Association’s 2003/2004 National Pet Owners Survey U.S. consumers spend an estimated $ 31 billion annually on products and services for their pets. At the same time, U.S. consumers spent nearly $ 500 million on internet-based dating in 2003; Jupiter Research projects that consumer spending for online dating will exceed $ 700 million by 2007.

“Animal Attraction will become the meeting place for pet lovers” said Cohen. “Animal Attraction members can easily communicate through email, instant messaging, chat rooms and message boards. The site also features pet care information from the Humane Society of The United States and information on Animal Attraction “meet-ups” and Animal Attraction-hosted events across the country.

Drugs…Doping…Cheating –Insider Talks about the Worst Scandals in Sports

(PRWEB) July 21, 2004

Drugs…Doping…Cheating –Insider Talks about the Worst Scandals in Sports

You’ve seen the headlines, most recently in USA Today: “Runner to help in drug probe” and “U.S. Olympian hopefuls face drug accusations,” and a myriad of other scandals. Dr. James D. Chlovechok, a sports insider, doctor, Medical Director of the Ohio Sports Medicine Institute, pro-boxer and author, has a lot to say about it. He’s well informed about the widespread drug use and dangers, the conduct unbecoming some of our high-profile athletes, the way rules are bent and broken.

Fact: 85% of today’s athletes admit they would take a potentially fatal drug, if it could guarantee a major championship.

Fact: Most fans are quick to overlook a sports star’s indiscretions, from substance abuse to drunk driving to criminal trials to illegal betting and worse

Forty-six, fit, and a father of five, Chlovechok is still going glove to glove with young opponents in the ring. Not only is he staying in the ring with people half his age, but, as a physician, he can comment on how and why this is possible—-without steroids or drugs (current status: 6 and 2 with 5 KOs). Admittedly, he is by no means the first athlete to be in top form at a past-your-prime age. Some of our best-loved and older athletes-—e.g. Roger Clemens, George Foreman, Darrell Green of the Washington Redskins, Martina Navratilova—-have shown remarkable staying power.

Chlovechok is also the author of “Game Face,” an intense, fast-paced novel that blends mystery and sports, medicine and murder—-a book that takes you behind the scenes where athletes will do anything to win—-even if it kills them.

John Eradi, award-winning sports writer for the Cincinnati Enquirer, calls Game Face “right on point;” Dean Chance, Major League Baseball Cy Young Award-winning pitcher and current IBA President has this to say: “Incredible. Chlovechok knows athletes;” Fritz Hagerman, Exercise Physiologist for the U.S. Olympic Rowing Team and Major League Baseball, NASCAR and NASA consultant calls Game Face “Accurate and disturbing;”and John Walsh of Book Ideas, says: an entertaining and educational thriller about an area of society that is of considerable importance but that is, nevertheless, underexamined!”

Concerned about the dangers of the new wave of highly advertised pills, both prescription and over the counter, and the things the pharmaceutical companies don’t want you to know, Chlovechok has penned a second (nonfiction) book “Infinite Risk,” about the dangers of NSAIDs.

Currently, Chlovechok is being featured on Sportsfan Radio network, WTRF-TV, WEKZ-FM, WFIN-AM, WSCR-AM, WYSR-AM, WNJC-AM, and seen in Foreword Magazine, PW, Fitness Magazine, Bowkers and more.

Not only will we raise money to fight brain cancer, but also we will have a fun-filled day full of love and support for Brian and those afflicted with brain cancer.”

A native of northern Virginia, Brian was diagnosed with a grade IV glioblastoma brain tumor on Sept. 8, 2003. Since that time, Brian has been forced to leave his job at the American Red Cross to courageously battle this disease. To date, Brian’s treatment has included four craniotomies, radiation, chemotherapy and participation in experimental clinical trials at The Brian Tumor Center at Duke University.

Brian and his wife Amy established The Brian Bedell 2-Young Foundation in 2004. The mission of the foundation is to help find a cure for brain cancer. The Brian Bedell 2-Young Foundation is a positive force for other patients dealing with a brain tumor diagnosis and strives to help other patients and their families deal with this formidable opponent.

His friends and family, inspired by Brian’s incredible spirit, have worked together to create the Northern Virginia Wiffle® Ball World Series in his honor. Joe Gibbs Racing Opens Online Treasure Chest for NASCAR and NHRA Collectors

Grandview, MO (PRWEB) April 26, 2006

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) is giving NASCAR and NHRA fans a chance to own pieces of racing history and rare collectibles that have never before been made available to the general public, while helping various charitable organizations in the process.

JGR has teamed with the online collectibles auction website GoMotorBids.com to auction one-of-a-kind pieces of race-used memorabilia as well as ultra-rare pre-production prototypes and samples of diecast collectibles. A portion of the proceeds will benefit charities of Joe Gibbs Racing and its drivers.

JGR owns and operates three teams in both the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and the NASCAR Busch Series with a driver lineup that includes two-time and reigning Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart and rookies Denny Hamlin and J.J. Yeley. Collectors will now be able to bid on the ultimate collectibles for these drivers, as well as drivers and teams from JGR?s storied past, such as 2000 NASCAR Cup Series champion Bobby Labonte, various JGR entries in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and Busch Series, plus the NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car teams campaigned by JGR in the 1990s.

Some of these items have been warehoused within JGR for more than a decade, but now the vault has been opened to race fans and collectors who are clamoring for authentic race-used driver uniforms, crew uniforms, helmets, race car sheet metal, artwork and one-off prototypes of diecast collectibles that are truly unique and highly valuable.

Dave Alpern, vice president of marketing for JGR, said, ?We are pleased to now be partnered with GoMotorBids.com. What excited us was the opportunity to raise money for charitable causes, while offering our fans legitimate collectibles from a trusted source.?

As with every auction on GoMotorBids.com, the JGR items will all start with a bid of $ 1 and have no reserve prices, assuring that the highest bidder wins. This ?no reserve policy? is quite contrary to industry standards, where many online sellers try and protect high-profile items with reserve prices or high starting bids. However, that technique is not practiced by GoMotorBids.com, as illustrated by The Home Depot uniform worn by Stewart that GoMotorBids.com auctioned for more than $ 20,000 to benefit the Jeff Gordon Foundation.

?We couldn?t be happier about opening the Joe Gibbs Racing Online Auction House,? said GoMotorBids.com president Patrick Rainey. ?JGR is known as an organization with a lot of integrity in everything they do, so we?re honored they chose us as an outlet for their race-used items and collectible prototypes. Plus it?s great for the collectors, as they get the opportunity to add something to their collection that very few people ever get the chance to own. ?

The Joe Gibbs Racing Online Auction house officially went live on April 23, 2006. With this, JGR joins Jeff Gordon, Inc. to become the second high-profile NASCAR organization to partner with GoMotorBids.com in auctioning their unique items. For more information or to view the first batch of items up for auction, visit the homepage at http://www.GoMotorBids.com.

Development drivers also under contract to JGR are Aric Almirola in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, along with Woody Howard and Joey Logano, both of whom compete in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series.

In partnership with the late Reggie White, a Hall of Fame defensive end who played in the National Football League, JGR formed the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series team as part of its diversity program with Marc Davis. It is a grassroots stock car team that identifies and assists minorities with the desire and talent to make a career in motorsports.

Based in Huntersville, N.C., and owned by Joe Gibbs — a three-time Super Bowl-winning coach, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and current coach of the Washington Redskins — JGR has competed in NASCAR since 1992, winning three Cup Series championships and over 50 NASCAR races, including two Brickyard 400s and the 1993 Daytona 500.

Veterans’ Day Reminder from Men’s Health Network: Pay Attention to Bladder Cancer Symptoms and Risk Factors

Washington DC (PRWEB) November 8, 2009

Men?s Health Network (MHN) kicked-off their Veteran?s Day efforts with the ?The 2nd Annual Timeout for Veteran?s Health Screening and Education Event? on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the Washington Redskins players locker room with free comprehensive health screenings and information for veterans. MHN urges all Americans to recognize our veterans and help ensure that they are getting access to health information and care that they need to live long and healthy lives.

The Veterans Health Council (VHC) was established last May to improve veterans? health through information and advocacy. More than 50 organizations including Men?s Health Network are participating. VHC reports the information challenge is reaching the veterans when ?at least 80 percent of vets do not use the VA (medical centers) as their healthcare provider and only some 25 percent are members of veterans service organizations.?

?We are proud to be an active partner in the Veterans Health Council as we continue to address the growing health needs of those who have so dutifully and sacrificially served our country,? shared Scott Williams, VP for Men?s Health Network. Twitter us at https://twitter.com/MensHlthNetwork.

In July, Richard Curry reported on the Vietnam Veterans of America website that ?These vets were developing diabetes, Hodgkin?s disease, and more than 30 varieties of cancer, yet they remained unaware that their illnesses were related to military service, and that treatment as well as disability benefits were available to them through the VA.? VHC (http://www.veteranshealth.org) is working to ?ensure that veterans get proper service-related diagnoses in a timely manner, and are fully appraised of their options for care and compensation.?

Bladder cancer is the newest addition to a list of health risks facing military veterans. National Institute for Health reports the prevalence rate of bladder cancer among veterans is increasing. Bladder cancer has long been recognized as a leading occupational cancer because of workplace exposure to toxins. Giora Katz, M.D, urologist, reported in 2006, ?A multi-center study of a NMP22 point-of-care test for bladder cancer diagnosis found the veterans? hospitals represented 9% of the sites in the study, but accounted for 16% of the cancers. All patients presented with the same symptoms (hematuria ? blood in the urine, or painful or frequent urination), but the percentage of those diagnosed with bladder cancer at the veterans? hospitals was 11.1%, compared to 5.7% at the community and academic practices. In addition, most of the malignancies at VA hospitals were already in an early invasive stage, compared to the other sites where the most common stage was noninvasive.?

Bladder Cancer is often referred to as one of the costliest cancers in part due to the high recurrence rate of this cancer. Today, more than a half million people have had or are living with bladder cancer. According to government data, bladder cancer annual costs are almost $ 3 billion compared to $ 1.5 billion spent on prostate cancer. Consider these bladder cancer facts: Smoking is the major risk factor followed by workplace exposure to chemicals and combustible gases. Other risk factors include, atomic site exposure, arsenic in drinking water, chemotherapy or radiation, family history, as well as, a medical history of gonorrhea. Veterans as a group have a higher incidence of smoking; an estimated 40 percent of veterans ages 65 year and older are smokers.

Download the Men?s Health Network ?Veterans and Bladder Cancer Fact Sheet? at http://www.menshealthnetwork.org within its online library. Health professionals can review bladder cancer medical studies and a recent webinar specifically addressing Veterans and Bladder cancer at the http://www.urotoday.com.
