Summer Food Crisis Imminent For Many Dallas Children

Dallas, TX (Vocus) April 15, 2010

To most children, summertime gives thoughts of swimming, cookouts and vacations. But for over 300,000 Dallas area children, summer is a time of hunger. To address this problem, May 1-2, Greater Dallas Justice Revival is launching a weekend of activities to build awareness to ?End Summer Hunger?.

?Hunger doesn?t take a vacation,? explains Randy Skinner, director of Greater Dallas Justice Revival. ?When school is out, thousands of children in Dallas are not getting enough daily nutrition. It?s sad that Texas is the 2nd hungriest state in the union and 1st in terms of child hunger. Dallas should not be known as the face of hunger!? (USDA current Population Survey)

The ?End Summer Hunger? kickoff on Sat. May 1st (from 4-10PM) begins with a family festival and concert including major musical artists, Grammy Award winners TobyMac, Casting Crowns, along with 10th Ave North, Caleb, and Jeff Johnson.

Concert promoter TWENTY TEN Mission announced that Chad Henning, three time Super Bowl winner of the Dallas Cowboys, along with Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers (via video) will challenge the expected 10,000 participants on May 1st to take action to help end summer hunger for over 300,000 Dallas area school children.

On May 1-2nd and during the month of May, the Greater Dallas Justice Revival (a thousand church interdenominational network), will join thousands of church members to hit the streets on May 1 -2nd, to help end hunger by working with the Texas Hunger Initiatives. Volunteers will also be working in ?Adopt-a-School? program launched by the Greater Dallas Justice Revival last November. Activities will continue through the month of May, including a statewide outreach day on May 22 for the Texas Hunger Initiative.

?People think that they need to take an overseas trip to make a difference, but there are so many children who need help in our city,? adds Skinner. ?It is so easy to make a difference — make some sack lunches, mentor a middle school student or help plant a garden. Working together it is possible to end summer hunger. There is no better investment that in the future of our children.”

Attendees for the May 1st concert (from 4-10PM) are asked to bring 2 canned food items or non-perishable boxed foods to donate before entry to the festival.

Dallas Weight Loss Surgeon and Three-time Super Bowl Champ Pursue another Winning Season Together

Colleyville, TX (Vocus) June 9, 2010

David D. Kim, M. D. has performed over 3000 weight loss surgeries between his Live Life Again Center for Bariatric Surgery practice and the Advanced Bariatric Center of Dallas. He is also approaching his 1,000th procedure of the vertical gastric sleeve in Dallas. Dr. Kim has been performing this operation for more than three years and has extensive experience with this procedure. In addition to this milestone, he is also garnering a portion of the national spotlight for weight loss surgery with the unlikely pairing of the Live Life Again Center for Bariatric Surgery and the brute strength of six time Pro-bowl offensive lineman, and current radio host for ESPN Dallas 103.3 fm, “Big” Nate Newton. During his career as a professional football player, Mr. Newton was able to maintain his weight because of the high level of physical activity required by his position. But when his career ended, he was saddled with a number of injuries sustained during his career, making it difficult to walk, let alone exercise. More than a decade later, Nate Newton weighed in at 400 pounds.

At this weight, the former NFL star was considered ?super obese? and needed help, which is where Dr. Kim comes in. Most patients in this position would qualify for LAP-BAND

Dallas Fort-Worth Weight Loss Surgeon Dr. David Kim Teams Up With Healthcare Products Leader Covidien

Colleyville, TX (Vocus) September 28, 2010

Dr. David Kim has teamed up with healthcare products leader, Covidien, in an effort to advance the field of weight loss surgery in Dallas, across the Midwest, and throughout the country. Dr. Kim recently became a proctor for Covidien, and traveled to United Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX to instruct two other surgeons on the vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

The vertical sleeve gastrectomy, also known as the laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection, is the same procedure Dr. Kim performed for Nate Newton, which has been a tremendous success, leading to a 130 pound weight loss for Mr. Newton. Like other bariatric surgery procedures such as laparoscopic gastric bypass and the LAP-BAND System in Dallas, Dr. Kim says the vertical sleeve gastrectomy is providing patients that may not be eligible for other weight loss surgeries another option in the fight against obesity.

Before the vertical sleeve gastrectomy was first introduced to the U. S. in 2007, it was part of an older operation known as the biliopancreatic diversion. With the updated, innovative approach to weight loss surgeries, the vertical sleeve gastrectomy ultimately removes 70% of the stomach to reduce the amount of food the patient can consume. Since it was first introduced, Dr. Kim has gained extensive experience with the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and as the procedure increases in popularity?due in part to the high profile partnership with Nate Newton?Dr. Kim remains dedicated to improving and advancing the field of bariatric surgery, and the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, through further relationships like the one formed with Covidien.

About Dr. Kim

David D. Kim, M. D. earned his medical degree at the College of Medicine at Northeastern Ohio Universities. He completed his general surgery residency at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Kim received a Fellowship for Peripheral Vascular Surgery at Park Medical Center, and another for Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass at the Medical College of Virginia. He is a member and fellow of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the American Society of General Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Congress, and the Tarrant County Medical Society.

Dr. David D. Kim has two locations, the first of which is the Live Life Again Center for Bariatric Surgery, and is located at 35 Veranda Lane Ste. 100 Colleyville, TX 76034; the second location, the Advanced Bariatric Center of Dallas, is located at 11990 North Central Expressway in Dallas, TX 75243. He can be reached at http://www.mylapbanddallas.com/ or http://www.drdkim.net/index.html – (214) 614-7036 for his Dallas patients and (817) 717-7447 for his Fort Worth patients.
