High School Sports The Magazine to Kick Off Premiere Issue with Collin County Playoff Preview

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) September 24, 2007

Communities in the North Dallas area of Collin County will be introduced to a new high octane glossy sports magazine devoted exclusively to high school sports as business developer JD Sanders launches High School Sports The Magazine: Collin County, in November of 2007.

“Our organization has always focused on improving the quality of life in the communities we serve. HSSTM expands that passion for FTG Media, awarding us the opportunity to publish a wholesome, top tier magazine dedicated to showcasing the accomplishments of local student athletes, schools, and the community … for us, it’s just completely a win-win situation,” said Sanders.

Each issue holds human-interest stories inspired by local student athletes, advice for parents and electrifying coverage of regional high school sporting events. The magazine is free to the community and will be distributed at high-traffic convenience stores, restaurants and supermarkets.

Sanders and Publisher Ryker Young started FTG Media, LLC earlier in the summer and plan on expanding the publishing territory to North Dallas County and South Dallas County within the next year. FTG Media also owns rights to counties north, east, and south of Dallas, and plans to launch publications in East Texas including Tyler.

Sanders has hired a staff boasting decades of national and local publishing experience. Editor-in-Chief Tim Polzer began his 20-year journalism career covering high school sports in the Dallas-Fort Worth area before going on to work as an editor and producer for the National Football League, NFL.com, SportsIllustrated.com and Beckett Publications. Polzer has written on the realm of sports from Super Bowls to U.I.L. girls regional basketball finals and interviewed the likes of high school heroes turned Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin, and high school legends such as Todd Dodge. Polzer’s work has appeared in USA Today, New York Times, Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News and NFL Insider.

“When I had my first look at High School Sports The Magazine, I asked: ‘What took you so long?’ Never has such a high-quality monthly magazine been devoted to the achievements of Texas high school athletes, their schools and their communities,” said Polzer.

Sanders has been a professional marketing executive and business developer for 19 years. He’s addressed entrepreneurs for the U.S. Small Business Administration, counseled numerous venture capitalists and was a full partner in THE ISIS GROUP, a private consulting firm focusing on Franchise and Business Acquisition and Valuation. His specialty is marketing, market expansion and penetration and concept development.

“We intend to capitalize on HSSTM’s experience and the overwhelming interest in our product by expanding rapidly into North and then South Dallas, and eventually East Texas. After all, who doesn’t like High School Sports?” asked Sanders.

Sanders is distributing 30,000 copies per issue of High School Sports The Magazine: Collin County at approximately 300 area locations. The full-color, 100-page publication will also be distributed to schools and athletic directors. An online digital version will be available as well. Community members can find the free magazine at area Tom Thumb stores, 7-11 convenience Stores, Wal-Mart, Blockbuster Video, select Sam’s Clubs and other retail establishments.

High School Sports The Magazine was founded in 2005 to celebrate the dedication and winning spirit of high school athletes. HSSTM provides unique high school sports coverage and real-life stories about student athletes in each community it serves. HSSTM began franchising its concept in September 2006 and plans a rapid expansion into 25 additional major markets in the near future. High School Sports The Magazine: Collin County, is the 13th franchise of its kind awarded nationwide.

Leading Edge Displays Installs Indoor LED Display in Spring High School’s Cafeteria

Houston, TX (PRWEB) September 10, 2011

Leading Edge Displays is installing a high definition, indoor LED display in the cafeteria of Spring High School in Houston Texas. Principals Pat Carey and Hannibal Trent originally came up with the idea of having an HD-like television screen that will correspond with the morning announcements each day. After Leading Edge Displays installed a full color outdoor LED display for the marquee sign in front of the school, the Principals wanted to know if they had any LED displays that could be used for indoor use. Curtis Cavazos, the Assistant General Manager at Leading Edge Displays, recommended a 5″ x 8″ high definition LED display that’s specifically designed for indoor viewing. After consulting with the principals as well as some of the operations coordinators for the Spring School District, they agreed that the LED display would work great in the cafeteria, about 20 feet up.

Leading Edge Display’s content designer Amanda Schultz has been working closely with Communications Teacher Renee Crowell, who is going to be in charge of all the graphical content that’s displayed on the sign. Crowell had been in charge of creating videos with some of the theatre arts students that would promote ethical standards throughout the school’s halls. Now, they have a gigantic LED display screen to showcase these videos and skits. Crowell came up with the idea that they can play these videos in the morning when the students are congregating in the cafeteria, as well as during lunch. The other times the sign will display the school’s upcoming sporting events, theater plays, and other advertising venues such as how to order a school yearbook. Now students can check out the massive LED display in the cafeteria to find out what time the Student Council meeting is or where the football team is playing next.

This LED display will be constantly updated each day with the school’s announcements. The amount of pictures, videos, and animation that can be viewed on these LED displays are literally endless. Not only can you display messages and text in over 400 different fonts and colors, but you can literally play a Blue-Ray DVD on this massive screen. One thing’s for certain. With Leading Edge Display’s lifetime warranty on any web-based tech support, you can bet that Amanda and Renee will be talking a lot.

About Leading Edge Displays:

Based in Houston, TX, Leading Edge Displays provides the US with LED signs, which are the most effective on-site marketing tools that help generate more business for companies of all sizes. The Texas LED sign company offers these on-site advertisements to allow businesses to grow in terms of clientele and local recognition. National High School Combine Association Helping High School Kids Show Their Football Talents with College Exposure

(PRWEB) January 14, 2005

The “Combine is an event that tests a combination of several skills including speed, power, strength, and agility. These skills are used to evaluate an athlete’s overall skill level. This event makes it easy for college scouts to see a variety of athletes and for athletes to increase their exposure to many different Division I, II and III colleges from across the nation.

The criterion for eligibility is any High School Football athletes going into 11th, or 12th grade.

The NHSCA provides an opportunity to those who participate to showcase their skills and talents to collegiate football coaches and recruiters from NAIA and NCAA Division I, II, and III football programs.

The cost of attending the NHSCA is a non-refundable early deposit of $ 55.00 or an on site registration fee of $ 75.00. This fee will cover the cost of your NHSCA T-shirt, individual printout of your combine results, and exposure to college coaches.

Due to the amount of athletes expected at the National High School Combine Association and the time constraints, we will only allow an athlete to participate in one position, (i.e. If a player plays two positions in high school, please select a position that you feel you would play in college). The variety of drills and skills demonstrated will give college coaches a true understanding of the player’s speed, strength and agility.

Certified Athletic Trainers from Xcellerate Sports will perform the testing and recording. Their staff is highly trained and all data will be objective. All tests will be standardized and some special equipment may be brought in to assure accurate results.

We will make available combine tape of each group. If you are interested, on the bottom of the application letter it states that it will take 8-10 weeks from the date of the Combine to receive your tape. The individual tapes are mailed out as soon as they are completed. We try very hard to have all the tapes completed and mailed out within 6 weeks, as we know you are anxious to send this information to your schools of interest.

Former 90210 HIGH SCHOOL Football, Musical Star And Son Of Actor Bernardi, To Make Stage Debut By, Steve Simmons, Beverly Hills Courier

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2009

Michael Bernardi is not only following in his father’s footsteps, but taking his own path, making his stage debut in Cabaret at the Met Theatre.

Bernardi’s father, actor Herschel Bernardi, died when his son was was only 2.

An Emmy-winner in the Peter Gunn series, the senior Bernardi was Tony-nominated for his Broadway stage roles as Zorba The Greek and Tevya in Fiddler On The Roof, known as the voice of The Jolly Green Giant and Charlie the Tuna and as Arnie on TV.

A star of early Yiddish theater, Herschel Bernardi was appearing on New York’s Second Avenue stages with his acting family before he could talk.

His 23-year-old son is now concentrating on the stage, though he has done a few small film roles and is working on his own production.

In Cabaret, he has a featured role as Cliff Bradshaw, the American writer involved with Sally Bowles (Kalinda Gay), but wooed by Bobby (Korken Alexander).

A 2003 Beverly High graduate, Bernardi played middle linebacker and guard on the football team. “I went from football practice to show rehearsals,” he said. “I went through a lot of deodorant.

“At some point I realized that I wanted to focus more on what my dream was; to immerse myself in theater and be an actor.”

So he stopped playing football, even though he was team co-captain.

Acting was something he had always taken to. He told jokes at Passover dinner, “to a crowd of old Jews. I liked performing and talking to groups of people.” And at 8, he was doing stand up at the Comedy Store.

He opened his act saying. “I have a hard life–I’m surrounded by women.”

Audiences responded and soon he was given time slots reserved for seasoned professionals–who were not always thrilled.

Since he wasn’t old enough to be in the club, he would perform and then sit in the kitchen drinking hot chocolate “with lots of whipped cream.”

Finally, he decided he “wanted to be a kid” and told his mom he wanted to stop comedy and play Pee Wee Football.

So Bernardi’s gone from comedy to football, football to theater.

He feels a strong spiritual tie with his father. “I used to sit on his lap at the piano every day,” Bernardi said. Herschel Bernardi’s recordings of lullabies allowed him to “father from beyond the grave,” says his son.

After BHHS, Bernardi attended SUNY Purchase, earning a BFA degree.

He credits BHHS Performing Arts Department Chair Joel Pressman with much of his success there.

“He taught me great discipline,” said Bernardi, who was a member of the Madrigals.

“When I got to the conservatory, there were all these kids and I was terrified. But I think the training at BHHS really did help prepare me.”

Bernardi returned to Los Angles, looking for work–in the midst of the writers’ strike.

A chance encounter with friend actor Edward Enriacas, who was in a show directed by his godfather, director Jim Eric, led to Bernardi’s current acting stint.

Open since June, the show has earned him attention and helped him get an agent.

He will celebrate his 24th birthday “as a crooner” giving an hour-long concert at Vitello’s Restaurant in Studio City.

Now he’s ready to get back to basics and “be with people who are passionate about theater. I’m ready to hit the pavement; I feel like I have my ducks in a row.”

Cabaret plays through Aug. 9., Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at The Met Theatre, 1089 N. Oxford St., Hollywood, one block east of Western Ave. and a few steps south of Santa Monica Blvd.

New Injury Rate Statistics for High School Athletes Highlight Need for Increased Prevention Efforts

Rosemont, IL (Vocus) September 1, 2009

With more and more kids participating in sports, injuries are on the rise -an estimated two million occurring each year, resulting in 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations. In a new study, published in the September issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM), researchers examined severe injuries by various sports, gender and injury area.

“Other studies have shown injury rates by sport, however very few studies have highlighted the severity of injuries per sport. Our research illustrated severe injuries occurring most frequently in football. In addition, girls seemed to suffer more severe injuries playing basketball than boys,” said Dawn Comstock, PhD, author and assistant professor at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Researchers captured injury data during the 2005-2007 school years from 100 nationally representative U.S. high schools. Eligible schools had a National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) affiliated certified athletic trainer (ATC) report and categorize injury details into the High School RIO (Reporting Information Online) injury surveillance system. Information was collected for nine sports: boys’ football, boys’ and girls’ soccer, girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ wrestling, boys’ baseball and girls’ softball. Severe injury was defined as any injury that resulted in a loss of more than 21 days of sports participation.

According to the study, severe injuries accounted for 14.9% of all high school sports-related injuries. After football injuries, wrestling, girls’ basketball and girls’ soccer maintained the highest levels of injury. Among directly comparable sports (soccer, basketball, and baseball/softball), girls sustained a higher severe injury rate than boys.

There were also patterns in injury sites with the knee sustaining a severe injury nearly 30 percent of the time along with the ankle (12.3%) and shoulder (10.9%). Additionally, five percent of the severe injuries recorded were a direct result of an illegal player activity, such as tripping or spear tackling.

“Finding ways to decrease the incidence and severity of sports-related injuries is critical to keeping kids playing sports long-term and reaping the benefits that organized athletics provides. Preventing these types of severe injuries is especially important to minimize health care costs both on the family and on the health care system itself,” said Comstock. “Future studies should focus on risk factors and developing prevention interventions.”

The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is a world leader in sports medicine education, research, communication and fellowship, and includes national and international orthopaedic sports medicine leaders. The Society works closely with many other sports medicine specialists, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, family physicians, and others to improve the identification, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries. High School Debaters Grapple with Organ Donation

Ripon, WI (PRWEB) April 13, 2011

Throughout April, high school debaters nationwide will engage in conversations that highlight the dire need for organ, eye and tissue donors as part of the National Forensic League?s Public Forum Debates. The topic, selected through a national vote involving more than 2,000 high schools in every state, will address whether financial incentives are appropriate for organ donations. The debates coincide with National Donate Life Month, which celebrates organ, eye and tissue donation and recognizes the need to increase donation, as thousands of people die every year waiting for a lifesaving transplant because the demand for transplants far outpaces the current level of donation in this country.

Public Forum Debate, which seeks to incorporate community members into rounds, is the nation?s most popular high school debate event. Public Forum debaters research both sides of monthly topics, obtaining information from public policy experts, journalists, academics, and partnership organizations to formulate arguments. Throughout the process, debaters, educators, and audiences become more informed about critically important social issues such as organ donation.

April?s Public Forum debates are offered in partnership with Donate Life America and Save Lives Now New York. Donate Life America is a not-for-profit alliance of national organizations and state teams across the United States committed to increasing organ, eye and tissue donation. Donate Life America manages and promotes the national brand for donation, Donate Life, and assists Donate Life State Teams and national partners in facilitating high-performing donor registries; developing and executing effective multi-media donor education programs; and motivating the American public to register now as organ, eye and tissue donors. For more information, visit http://www.donatelife.net.

Save Lives Now New York is the first and only not-for-profit New York entity focused on exploring public policy initiatives to increase the supply of organs available for life-saving transplants. Save Lives Now New York believes the current donation system in New York based on altruistic donation has unfortunately failed and needs immediate change. New York State ranks last in the nation with only an 11% sign-up rate on the state’s donor registry. With over 10,000 New Yorkers on the waiting list in literally a “life and death” waiting game, something different must clearly be done to deal with the organ shortage crisis.

Save Lives Now New York was co-founded by the father of a former Public Forum debater at Regis High School in New York City. To learn more about the organization or become involved in supporting its mission, please contact its Executive Director at TedLawson(at)SLNNY(dot)com.

About the National Forensic League

The NFL is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit honorary society whose mission is to promote high school and middle school speech and debate activities as a means to develop a student?s essential life skills and values.
