‘Ghost football players’ return in dream-team lineup

WHERE HOLLYWOOD MEETS REALITY

Hollywood’s famous for reality-based stories – and ones that capture our dreams.

But rather than a Hollywood ‘what if’, this summer the Belvidere Rush semi-pro football team will give Belvidere fans their own field of dreams football team. Seventy-five percent of the team’s 40-man roster is made up of former Belvidere Buc players, including a half dozen from the 1993 and 1994 State Championship teams. The back-to-back feat was harder because the teams jumped from Class 4 to Class 5 in 1994.

A PLACE WHERE FOOTBALL IS KING

In this sturdy Illinois town of 22,000 (the county is Illinois’ 4th-fastest growing county), an F-5 tornado rocked the community in 1967 and made it a household name and won a Pulitzer Prize for its now-defunct newspaper. A former Miss America hailed from this place. And there’s always been Football. It’s the place where football is king.

“We wanted to give back to the place we came from,” co-owner and player Brian Kelly said, who graduated from Rockford College and is now a financial analyst for Amcore Bank. “The team is a love of the game style. We also wanted to play on the field that brought us to where we are now.”

In current times, Funderburg Stadium holds a crowd of 3,000 people at Bucs’ games, especially when the Bucs face their biggest rival, the Rockford Boylan Titans.

FORMER RIVALS ON SAME SIDE OF THE BALL

The Rush, while about 75% strong of Belvidere alumni, will be made up of players from the area from other alma maters – including NIC-9 schools like Harlem and Boylan. In the Summer of ’03, the field will take on a rainbow coalition color that will be funneled into the new suit-up uniform of Silver & Blue.

“At the first meeting, we were asked where we were from,” said Ryan “HOS” Hoskinson. “The first 15 guys said ‘Belvidere.’ Then I go ‘Boylan.’

Hoskinson’s pointed out the two rival schools strong football tradition and style and summed up the common ground goal.

“It’s not about that (the mix of Belvidere-Boylan players). I just want to play football,” Hoskinson said. “These are guys I trust my life with.”

A GAME OF BROTHERS

In one of the many stories behind the Rush, the team is truly a game of brothers not just in spirit, but of the actual.

“My brother (Chuck Leonard) is 7 years older,” quarterback Chris Leonard (Christian Life HS 2002) said. “We never had the opportunity to play together and it’s been our dream to be on the field together.”

Chuck Leonard is one of the State Champion Bucs.

Chris Leonard, who is a freshman in college, is eligible to play college ball in the Fall of 2003 because as a Rush player he is “not making any money.” Leonard will play about half of the season under that arrangement.

The Rush’s fabled dream story will be chronicled at their website (http://www.belvidererush.com). The season begins July 5th and runs through September. The team plays in the Chicago-area MFL League.

Newberg, Ore. (PRWEB) September 02, 2011

For the first time in more than 40 years, George Fox University will host its homecoming festivities in the fall this year. All alumni are invited to return to the school?s Newberg, Ore., campus Friday through Sunday, Oct. 7-9, for the school?s 2011 homecoming celebration.

All former students of the university and its predecessors ? Pacific College, George Fox College and Western Evangelical Seminary ? are invited to attend the events, which include affinity reunions for biology and chemistry majors, seminary attendees, and those who were members of the school?s drama troupe, the University Players.

?After many years, it was time to re-imagine homecoming,? said Robby Larson, director of alumni relations. ?Moving this annual celebration to the fall allowed us to completely redesign the schedule of events to provide more opportunities for alumni to connect with one another and their alma mater. Our staff is excited for these significant changes and are sure that alumni will be as well.?

Reunions also are set for the classes of 1951, 1971, 1981, 1986, 1991 and 2001. The weekend will include an alumni celebration brunch, an outdoor tailgate party, women?s volleyball and soccer games, and a one-man theatre performance featuring 1991 alumnus Rich Swingle.

Attendees are also invited to attend campus tours; a student/alumni networking event; lectures presented by business professor Dirk Barram, history professor Caitlin Corning and former biology professor Dale Orkney; a young alumni social at Subterra restaurant in Newberg; and a homecoming worship service on Sunday morning.

Also, for those who graduated before 1962, a Classic Bruins Breakfast is scheduled from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Sunday. The event concludes with a Sunday brunch in the remodeled Klages Dining Room.

As always, homecoming will include a ceremony to recognize the 2011 Honored Alumni Award recipients: Dwight Kimberly (Heritage Award), Barbara Baker (Outstanding Alumnus Award), Margaret (Maggie) Holmes (Outstanding Recent Alumna), Linda Byrd (Christian Service Award) and David Wright (Seminary Alumnus of the Year). They will be honored at the alumni celebration brunch, scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Class reunions for the 10- through 60-year groups will take place at an all-new homecoming gala scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the nearby Chehalem Cultural Center, located at 415 E. Sheridan St. This semi-formal event is open to all alumni and is the cornerstone of the redesigned homecoming schedule.

George Fox offers bachelor?s degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees, and 11 master?s and doctoral degrees.

Return of Football Season Brings Attention to High Injury Rates and Need for Prevention

Rosemont, IL (Vocus) September 8, 2010

With fans anticipating the return of their favorite college and NFL players, thousands of young athletes also are conditioning for football programs of their own. The high-speed, full-contact plays may be an exciting aspect of the game, but also create a unique set of injuries that recent studies show are skyrocketing nationwide.

Favre?s Ankle Surgery Sets Stage For Return To Action

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) July 27, 2010

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre is going to turn 41 years old just after the 2010 NFL season gets underway. He is on the books to start his 20th professional season behind center and is coming of his most prolific offensive output in over a decade, leading Minnesota to 12 wins and 33 touchdowns through the air. But he is also less than a week removed from his 3rd serious arthroscopic surgery and one more brutal hit could prove to be his permanent undoing.

20 years ago to the month, orthopedic surgeon to the stars, Dr. James Andrews, repaired his throwing elbow and the rest is professional football history. Prior to his first sports related trip under the knife, right before the start of his senior season at Southern Mississippi, he survived a near fatal car crash that would prove to be the first of many miracles he would experience.

After a shaky start to his career with the Atlanta Falcons, he has rattled off 19 stellar seasons and a seemingly untouchable NFL record 291 consecutive starts for the Green Bay Packers, New York Jets and the Vikings. During this record setting run he has collected 181 victories, 497 touchdowns, 11 Pro Bowl selections, 3 MVP awards and a Super Bowl title. But for an unknown reason, it has not been enough.

Even though many would credit his undying will and unequaled ego as the main contributing factors to the longevity of his soon to be Hall of Fame career, but the reality of it is he could not have done it without the expertise and excellence of his doctors and their staff. Most recently it was his left ankle that needed the tweak. Bone spurs and torn cartilage were the culprits, but after a successful surgery at the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida, Favre now has full range of motion and should be ready to run rampant and rifle the rock down the field in plenty of time for the preseason to kick off.

Not everybody can afford the luxury of being treated by the world famous Dr. Andrews, but thankfully there are other extremely qualified and board certified orthopedic surgeons around the country that can provide high caliber consultations and operations. One such surgeon is Florida native and current resident, Dr. Manish Gupta of the Specialty Orthopedic Center of Boca Raton.

After graduating from the University of Florida and University of Miami Medical School and completing 7 years of residency and fellowship at Seton Hall University and Union Memorial Hospital, Dr. Gupta served as a team physician on the Baltimore Ravens medical staff during his fellowship. He now gives back to his community with his private practice in Boca Raton.

These specialized and intensive sports related surgeries are expertly performed by Dr. Gupta and his staff at the surrounding hospitals that they are affiliated with. For more information on Dr. Manish Gupta and any of the procedures available through his practice please go to SpecialtyOC.com.

Kansas City Chiefs return to Wisconsin for summer camp

(PRWEB) July 14, 2004

After some uncertainty on whether or not the Kansas City Chiefs would return to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for its 14th summer training camp, the team will again be on the campus from July 29 to Aug. 21.

The training camp will be very similar to those in the past, offering opportunities for fans to get an up-close look into an NFL training camp, says camp coordinator Mary Halada, who noted that after 13 summers, a routine is an asset.

“We were in competition with many Missouri schools to be the site for this year’s training camp,” Halada said. “We will have the new locker and training rooms, and we already have great facilities and services. We will have the South Fork Suites next summer and a new student union the following summer. Everything was already in place with community support.”

The team and the University signed a one-year contract with four optional extensions for subsequent years.

The Chiefs, who won the NFC West Division last year with a regular-season record of 13-3, start summer camp with high expectations. Having several defensive openings, the team addressed that need by selecting Oregon defensive tackle Junior Siavii in the second round of the NFL Draft as their first pick. The 6-foot-5-inch, 340-pound Siavii was a force for the Ducks in his senior season.

Other Chiefs draft picks included Pittsburgh tight end Kris Wilson, Georgia Tech outside linebacker Keyaron Fox, Oregon wideout Samie Parker, Idaho State defensive end Jared Allen, Auburn wideout Jeris McIntyre and Syracuse offensive tackle Kevin Sampson.

The core of one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses returns in quarterback Trent Green, running back Priest Holmes and tight end Tony Gonzalez. Last season Green threw for more than 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns while Holmes rushed for more than 1,400 yards, racking up 27 scores. Gonzalez led the Chiefs receiving corps with more than 900 yards, and exciting receiver/return man Dante Hall scored four times on special teams.

Wisconsin native Mike Maslowski, a graduate of UW-La Crosse, anchors the Chiefs’ defense from his linebacker position where he recorded 79 total tackles a season ago.

Head coach Dick Vermeil enters his fourth season with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs will arrive in River Falls July 28 with the first practice scheduled for Thursday afternoon, July 29. Two practices per day will begin on Friday, July 30, with sessions running from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on most days. Fans can visit the Web site at http://www.uwrf.edu/chiefs for updates or call 1-800-4-KCC-KCC.

Highlighting the month-long training camp will be special events put on by UW-RF including Family Fun Night, Punt, Pass and Kick Competition, Taste of the Chiefs, Flyfishing camp as well as Kids’ and Seniors’ days.

Another favorite event is the Chiefs’ scrimmage with the Minnesota Vikings. The scrimmage is Aug. 5-6 at the Vikings’ training camp at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn. The Vikings will test the Chiefs’ defense with the offensive threats of Daunte Culpepper, Randy Moss and Michael Bennett, among others.

Last year the Chiefs and Vikings put together the two best starts in the NFL. The Chiefs eventually lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs while the Vikings didn’t make the NFC field.

The annual Family Fun Night will be Aug. 17 at Ramer Field. Gates open at 4 p.m. with food, music, games and other activities. An autograph session featuring players and coaches will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Practice under the lights will follow the autograph session, and a fireworks display will culminate the festivities.

The Punt, Pass and Kick Competition will be July 31 before the afternoon session of practice at Ramer Field with awards being handed out following practice. Competition will begin at 1 p.m. with registration starting at 12:30 at the field or register online at http://www.uwrf.edu/chiefs/ppk.form.2004.html. Girls and boys will be divided into six groups (ages 8-13), and everyone will receive a ribbon. Trophies will be given to the top three finishers in each division. In each of the past two years, Coach Vermeil has presented the trophies to the winners.

Senior Citizen Day and Kids’ Days, which offer special tours of facilities and food discounts during morning practices, will also be held. Senior’s Day is Tuesday, Aug. 10 starting at 8 a.m. Kids’ Days are Monday, Aug. 2 and Thursday Aug. 19 starting at 8 a.m.

Fans can again get a closer look at training facilities in the Robert P. Knowles Center and Hunt Arena. This spring, the state of Wisconsin approved a $ 2.2 million addition to the Knowles Center that will provide a larger locker room and updated training facility, scheduled to be completed next summer.

Extensive coverage and daily updates of all the action will be available on UW-RF’s award-winning Web site, http://www.uwrf.edu/chiefs. Call the Chiefs’ hotline at 1-800-4-KCC-KCC for the information on daily practice times and event dates, which are subject to change.

Football Fans Create Holiday to Celebrate Return of America’s Game

Sterling, VA (PRWEB) August 4, 2005

With the start of training camp, many football fans are getting revved up for the upcoming season. Meanwhile Dallas Cowboy fans Laura and Donald Poindexter of Sterling, Virginia are preparing to celebrate a holiday all their own. They call it Football Thanksgiving.

“Football Thanksgiving is a celebration of the return of the National Football League on the first Sunday of the regular season,” said Laura Poindexter.

This year the celebration falls on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Poindexter’s celebration includes a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey and all the fixings and now they have a logo, web site (http://www.footballthanksgiving.com) and merchandise. “Football Thanksgiving has been a tradition in our family and circle of friends for over 10 years. We wanted to share our love of the game and our celebration with all football fans so we created the website to share our menu, recipes, and celebration ideas.”

The Poindexters were celebrating some form of Football Thanksgiving since they started dating in 1993, but they mark the first official Football Thanksgiving as Sept. 6, 1998 – their wedding day.

“We were married on a horse farm and had a handheld TV so we could catch the end of the Cowboys game. I had Donald’s groom’s cake decorated like the field in Texas Stadium,” said Poindexter. These two avid Cowboys fans went to – where else – Dallas for their honeymoon to catch two games at Texas Stadium.

The Football Thanksgiving website also includes merchandise including t-shirts, aprons for the chef of the house, party invitations, and an online newsletter to keep fans up to date on celebration ideas.

Sports Traveler Radio (STR) Highlights the NFL’s Return to New Orleans and the Superdome

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 22, 2006

Sports Traveler Radio (STR) hosted by Nick Jakusz and Angelo Bonnadonna profile the New Orleans and the New Orleans Saints as part of the broadcast teams 17-week series, “Nick and Angelo’s Virtual NFL Road Trip”. The broadcast/podcast features updated travel information and the true condition of the city of New Orleans as it looks to welcome back the NFL one year after Hurricane Katrina, on Monday, September 25, 2006.

“We’re really excited to have something positive to look forward to,” says Mary Beth Romig, Director of Communications and Public Relations with the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau. Romig added, “The Dome is better than ever”. Unlike many of the images of a devastated New Orleans so often seen in the media since Hurricane Katrina struck the area in August of 2005, Romig wanted tourists and football fans considering to visit New Orleans for a New Orleans Saints game to know that they can expect to find the historic areas of the city to be very much alive and thriving. Fans can take Riverboat cruises or even stroll the French Quarter without worry as those areas received little to no flood damage at all.

Events scheduled for the weekend include a street fair, a concert by the Goo Goo Dolls, and a small version of the NFL Experience to be set up outside of the SuperDome.

Sports Traveler Radio (STR) can be accessed online at http://www.sportstraveler.net or downloaded to any iPod or media player. “Nick and Angelo’s Virtual NFL Road Trip” will continue throughout the NFL season broadcasting travel information about a different NFL city each week and will conclude in Miami for Super Bowl XLI.
