Construction Begins on Slotland.com?s Malawi School Project

Juma, Malawi (PRWEB) December 22, 2005 -?

Ground has been broken at the school Slotland.com?s ?New Chance for a New Generation? project has given to an impoverished African village. Provided the rains don?t delay construction, the school will begin providing a better outlook for the children of Juma, Malawi early next year.

?Our players know what a big role luck plays in their lives,? said Hannah Morante of Slotland.com (http://www.Slotland.com). ?Those that live in areas where we can enjoy the luxury of online entertainment should remember just how lucky we are. We feel good about sharing our prosperity with those less fortunate, and everyone that plays at Slotland.com can share in that good feeling.?

The school foundation was recently dug out by a local football team in exchange for one football and set of twelve football kits in the colors of Manchester United. As the rainy season is starting and prices will rise, the local organizers hurried to buy all the needed building materials such as gravel, sand, cement, planks and iron sheets, as well as building tools with the initial funding provided by Slotland.com.

The impoverished village of Juma is near Blantyre City, the industrial capital of Malawi. The region is of little interest to both government and non-governmental organizations. Local people rely on growing maize and other vegetables, or occasion piecework if they can find it. Without this help from the western world, the future looked bleak for its children.

The ?New chance for a new generation? project obtained support from local traditional authorities ? both the village headman and the group village headman — who gave the project a vast piece of land for building a preschool and for growing enough maize and vegetables for the school kitchen.

?An important part of our project is the extension officer, a local secondary-school teacher,? explains Project Coordinator, Tereza Mirovicova. ?Thanks to his knowledge of the local environment and people, we?ve been able to identify and employ experienced and reliable builders.?

Thanks to the hard work of local workers and organizers, and the generosity of Slotland.com, there is new hope in the New Year for the children of a struggling African village.

Fuel Up to Play 60 Kicks Off a Healthy New School Year

Orlando, Fla. (PRWEB) September 12, 2011

The White House has declared September National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, a reminder to all Americans that instilling physical activity and healthy eating habits among our nation?s youth is more important than ever before. The month also kicks off the third season of Fuel Up To Play 60 and a new school year of motivating students to take charge of their well-being.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program that encourages consuming nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and achieving 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Launched by the National Dairy Council (NDC) and the NFL in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), it empowers youth to take action for their own health by providing an opportunity to implement long-term, positive changes for themselves and their schools.

?We need to provide today?s youth with opportunities to own their health decisions and access fun ways to live a healthy lifestyle,? said Jean Ragalie, RD, president of the National Dairy Council. ?Fuel Up to Play 60 does just that, connecting students with tangible ways to take a stand against childhood obesity.? Examples include students working directly with their schools to have breakfast offered in new and fun ways or starting walking clubs.

Parents can support Fuel Up to Play 60?s mission by making their children healthy lunches and encouraging exercise throughout the school week. Other tips for busy moms and dads include:

Don?t Get Hung Up: Don?t allow yourself to be frustrated by trying to create the perfect meal for your kids ? as long as you work towards balance. Even the occasional chocolate chip cookie works?especially when served with milk!

Create a Game Plan: Prepare in advance, plan out the weekly lunches and snack needs for your kids? busy schedules. With just a few minutes of planning and preparing on Sunday, a well-balanced lunch is only minutes away.

Make Good Food…the Easy Way: Food does not have to be homemade to be nutritious. Feel free to reach for healthy packaged options like string cheese, yogurt, baby carrots or an apple.

Have Fun: Making meals together can be a fun activity to teach kids about the value of building a colorful and nutritious meal for themselves, and letting them co-own their own health and wellness.

Prioritize Family Time: Now that you have cleared up some time in your schedule, plan activities that help you and your child work toward achieving at least 60 minutes daily of physical activity ? from taking a walk after dinner to playing catch or dancing in the backyard.

?The National Football League is strongly committed to helping the next generation of youth achieve healthier lifestyles. Entering its fifth year, our NFL PLAY 60 campaign encourages kids to get active and play 60 minutes a day. We are pleased that Fuel Up to Play 60 extends that message to include healthy eating. Through Fuel Up to Play 60, we help young people to discover that healthy habits can be both fun and empowering,? said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The Fuel Up to Play 60 program provides participating schools with the resources they need to implement the program including in-school collateral materials, planning tools and grant funding. Together with the involvement of multiple supporting health and nutrition organizations ? Action for Healthy Kids, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Dietetic Association, National Hispanic Medical Association, National Medical Association and School Nutrition Association ? the program reaches more than 70,000 schools across the country with plans to expand its reach and impact in the years to come.

Concussed High School Athletes who Receive Neuropsychological Testing Sidelined Longer

Rosemont, IL (Vocus/PRWEB) December 29, 2010

When computerized neuropsychological testing is used, high school athletes suffering from a sports-related concussion are less likely to be returned to play within one week of their injury, according to a study in The American Journal of Sports Medicine. Unfortunately, concussed football players are less likely to have computerized neuropsychological testing than those participating in other sports.

A total of 544 concussions were recorded by the High School Reporting Information Online surveillance system during the 2008-2009 school year. Researchers looked at each of those instances to see what caused the injury, what sport was being played, what symptoms were experienced, what type of testing was used, and how soon the athletes returned to play. When looking at the causes and duration of concussions, the research found that:

McAnany Construction Upgrades Rockhurst High School Athletic Field with TigerTurf

Austin, Texas (Vocus/PRWEB) January 27, 2011

The Rockhurst High School football and soccer teams earned an unexpected bonus when the synthetic turf on their athletic field was replaced with TIGER XQ 48 by McAnany Construction: both teams won state championships, an achievement school leaders attribute in part to a higher quality field that increased player performance.

Rockhurst High School, a Jesuit preparatory school for boys headquartered in Kansas City, engaged McAnany Construction of Shawnee, Kansas, in July 2010 to replace the existing synthetic turf for its athletic field over a period of only 17 days. The Rockhurst field is used for football, soccer, lacrosse, and gym classes. By August, McAnany had completed the installation of 103,000 square feet of TIGER XQ 48. Athletes find that TIGER XQ 48 offers them the feel and playability of real grass. The artificial turf product is made of high quality yarn that offers better recovery and durability, which enables it to retain its integrity and deliver optimum performance for the life of the turf installation.

?We chose McAnany and TigerTurf because we were assured a very quick turn-around time for replacement of the old turf. We also knew they could complete a quality installation that included re-grading of the sub-surface. The TigerTurf product proved to be as durable as promised, and our coaches and players loved playing on it this past fall season. No doubt, it contributed to our state championships in both soccer and football!? explained Father Terrence A. Baum, S.J., president of Rockhurst High School.

Ed Huggins, vice president responsible for athletic fields and golf course renovation with McAnany Construction, served as the project manager for the Rockhurst High School project. Huggins explained that the Rockhurst High School Athletic Department chose McAnany and TigerTurf because of key competitive advantages. For example, McAnany and TigerTurf had the ability to complete the upgrades to the athletic field before the start of the Fall 2010 football season, whereas competitors had told school officials that the project would have to be done after the football season ended.

?McAnany had the resources to get the job done quickly and efficiently. We started in July and were finished in August,? Huggins said. ?TigerTurf was the best match for this project. We have worked with TigerTurf since 2008 and have built a solid relationship with the company. We knew the quality of TigerTurf?s product is very good. Because the McAnany family has had a long-standing relationship with Rockhurst High School, all of us working for the company had a vested interest in making sure this project went well.?

Project Details

Huggins explained that McAnany first had to extract the rubber infill from the existing athletic field. Next, the McAnany team removed the existing turf.

?What makes us unique is that instead of disposing the rubber infill, we recycled and reused 90 percent from the existing field. We also offered our customer the option to use a green rubber infill for the new field instead of using black infill. Also, we were able to salvage 80 percent of the turf from the old field to be used for other projects,? Huggins said, noting that Rockhurst High School saved 15 to 20 percent of the estimated total cost of the project due to the elimination of disposal costs and the ability to reuse the turf and infill.

?TigerTurf is thrilled to have provided Rockhurst High School with our premium athletic field surface ? especially since this is one of the State of Missouri?s premiere high school athletic programs. Because of its unique composition and characteristics, the TIGER XQ 48 system gives the Rockhurst Hawklets athletic program the ultimate, high performance athletic field in the country. The new TigerTurf field is one of the finest high school surfaces in the country and even better than that of most colleges, universities, and professional sports fields,? commented Bob Aurich, regional sales manager for TigerSports Americas, Inc.

About McAnany Construction

McAnany Construction was founded in 1954 by Richard S. McAnany and has been located in Shawnee, Kansas, since then. The company continues to be family-owned and operated, with Patrick McAnany, Timothy McAnany, Philip McAnany and Roger Vossman serving as the second generation of leaders.

Back to School Awards for Products That Involve Dads With Kids

San Francisco, California (PRWEB) September 13, 2011

Mr. Dad and GreatDad.com announce Seal of Approval winners for Back to School 2011. The modern dad is involved in every aspect of parenting and some products just seem developed with the dad style of parenting in mind.

The Mr. Dad Seal of Approval and GreatDad.com Recommends awards identify products that promote interaction between dads and kids. Mr. Dad and GreatDad have awarded the seals to products from small companies as well from some of the world?s biggest brands including Lego, Haba USA, and Nintendo. The combined awards recognize companies whose products and services help strengthen and empower families, and help fathers create memorable, enriching experiences with their children.

?Our goal is to find toys and gear that will motivate dad to get down on the floor and play with his baby or child. In some cases, these are products that make dad?s job easier. We want to identify products that dads can enjoy with their child, as well as recognize companies that go above and beyond in creating products and services that help fathers become better parents and improve the father-child bond,? said Paul Banas of GreatDad.com.

?While moms still make most buying decisions around babies and kids, moms and dads more than ever want products that appeal to both sexes. Dad shouldn’t be turned off by gear that is clearly only meant for mom. It?s more important than ever to recognize and champion products and services that promote positive parenting and demonstrate a commitment to helping fathers become the parents they want to be,? adds Armin Brott. Brott is founder of MrDad.com and author of eight best-selling books on fatherhood, including the recently released third edition of The Expectant Father: Fact, Tips and Advice for Dads-to-Be.

A panel of dad experts judged products or services based on whether the products:
