Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) September 24, 2007

Communities in the North Dallas area of Collin County will be introduced to a new high octane glossy sports magazine devoted exclusively to high school sports as business developer JD Sanders launches High School Sports The Magazine: Collin County, in November of 2007.

“Our organization has always focused on improving the quality of life in the communities we serve. HSSTM expands that passion for FTG Media, awarding us the opportunity to publish a wholesome, top tier magazine dedicated to showcasing the accomplishments of local student athletes, schools, and the community … for us, it’s just completely a win-win situation,” said Sanders.

Each issue holds human-interest stories inspired by local student athletes, advice for parents and electrifying coverage of regional high school sporting events. The magazine is free to the community and will be distributed at high-traffic convenience stores, restaurants and supermarkets.

Sanders and Publisher Ryker Young started FTG Media, LLC earlier in the summer and plan on expanding the publishing territory to North Dallas County and South Dallas County within the next year. FTG Media also owns rights to counties north, east, and south of Dallas, and plans to launch publications in East Texas including Tyler.

Sanders has hired a staff boasting decades of national and local publishing experience. Polzer has written on the realm of sports from Super Bowls to U.I.L. girls regional basketball finals and interviewed the likes of high school heroes turned Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin, and high school legends such as Todd Dodge. Polzer’s work has appeared in USA Today, New York Times, Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News and NFL Insider.

“When I had my first look at High School Sports The Magazine, I asked: ‘What took you so long?’ Never has such a high-quality monthly magazine been devoted to the achievements of Texas high school athletes, their schools and their communities,” said Polzer.

Sanders has been a professional marketing executive and business developer for 19 years. He’s addressed entrepreneurs for the U.S. Small Business Administration, counseled numerous venture capitalists and was a full partner in THE ISIS GROUP, a private consulting firm focusing on Franchise and Business Acquisition and Valuation. His specialty is marketing, market expansion and penetration and concept development.

“We intend to capitalize on HSSTM’s experience and the overwhelming interest in our product by expanding rapidly into North and then South Dallas, and eventually East Texas. After all, who doesn’t like High School Sports?” asked Sanders.

Sanders is distributing 30,000 copies per issue of High School Sports The Magazine: Collin County at approximately 300 area locations. The full-color, 100-page publication will also be distributed to schools and athletic directors. An online digital version will be available as well. County School Board and Middle School Teacher Face Lawsuit Over Beating

Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) July 22, 2011

A parent has filed a federal lawsuit against the DeKalb County Board of Education and one of its teachers after her son came home from school with bruises on his body claiming to having been beaten by his science teacher, Mr. Stuart Mitchell. The 12 page lawsuit was filed by Melissa Lewis on behalf of her son Payton Lewis, a seventh-grade athlete and honor student at Plainview High School in Rainsville, Alabama. Lewis v. DeKalb County Board of Education et al, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, 5:11-cv-02627-JEO

According to the lawsuit, Payton returned from school complaining that his bottom hurt when Lewis discovered that he had been struck and was severely bruised for not making a high enough grade on a test. Complaints to Plainview School, The DeKalb County Board of Education, and the police were all futile, as were requests to have Payton transferred out of Mitchell’s classroom.

Alabama is one of 20 states that still allow corporal punishment in schools, and the DeKalb County Board of Education’s guidelines permit “the moderate use of physical force” for disciplinary reasons. The guidelines also require that students be given an alternative to corporal punishment, such as alternative school or detention.

According to the lawsuit, Mitchell applied excessive force and did so without a disciplinary reason. The lawsuit also alleges that Mitchell failed to offer Payton an alternative punishment prior to striking him.

Lewis’s attorneys, Greg Yaghmai of Rutledge & Yaghmai in Birmingham, and Abbey Herrin of the Law Offices of Abbey Herrin in Rainsville, believe that Mitchell’s alleged failure to adhere to the DeKalb County Board of Education’s guidelines constitutes due process violations. According to the lawsuit, the County Board of Education has received numerous complaints from parents for decades about the force used by Mitchell, a former football player at Auburn University.

As lead attorney for Lewis, Yaghmai states, ?This purpose of this suit is to not only address the harm to Payton, but to prevent other students from unjustly getting beaten in the future.?

Lewis is seeking compensatory damage and punitive damages along with injunctive relief preventing the future violations of the school board’s policies and procedures.

Hearing Tests Rarely Included in Back to School Medical Exams for Kids

Eden Prairie, MN (PRWEB) August 30, 2011

Fall signals the beginning of a new school year and sports season, prompting many parents to schedule a mandatory medical exam for their budding football players, soccer stars and cross country athletes. According to Hearing-Aid.com, however, most annual medical exams don?t include a routine hearing test, putting children at risk for undetected hearing loss.

Hearing-Aid.com cautions that many children may head back to school with a hearing problem that could hinder their performance in the classroom and on the playing field, and they urge parents to request a routine hearing test for their child during this fall?s back to school medical exam and get hearing loss treatment if necessary.

It is estimated that at least 1.4 million children age 18 or younger have hearing problems, and ear infections are the most common cause of hearing loss in young children. It is especially important for young children to have their hearing checked before each school year, as many ear infections crop up during the summer months when kids are spending more time at the pool or beach.

Hearing-Aid.com offers parents a list of common signs of hearing loss in children, including:

National High School Combine Association Helping High School Kids Show Their Football Talents with College Exposure

(PRWEB) January 14, 2005

The “Combine is an event that tests a combination of several skills including speed, power, strength, and agility. These skills are used to evaluate an athlete’s overall skill level. This event makes it easy for college scouts to see a variety of athletes and for athletes to increase their exposure to many different Division I, II and III colleges from across the nation.

The criterion for eligibility is any High School Football athletes going into 11th, or 12th grade.

The NHSCA provides an opportunity to those who participate to showcase their skills and talents to collegiate football coaches and recruiters from NAIA and NCAA Division I, II, and III football programs.

The cost of attending the NHSCA is a non-refundable early deposit of $ 55.00 or an on site registration fee of $ 75.00. This fee will cover the cost of your NHSCA T-shirt, individual printout of your combine results, and exposure to college coaches.

Due to the amount of athletes expected at the National High School Combine Association and the time constraints, we will only allow an athlete to participate in one position, (i.e. If a player plays two positions in high school, please select a position that you feel you would play in college). The variety of drills and skills demonstrated will give college coaches a true understanding of the player’s speed, strength and agility.

Certified Athletic Trainers from Xcellerate Sports will perform the testing and recording. Their staff is highly trained and all data will be objective. All tests will be standardized and some special equipment may be brought in to assure accurate results.

We will make available combine tape of each group. If you are interested, on the bottom of the application letter it states that it will take 8-10 weeks from the date of the Combine to receive your tape. The individual tapes are mailed out as soon as they are completed. We try very hard to have all the tapes completed and mailed out within 6 weeks, as we know you are anxious to send this information to your schools of interest.

Former 90210 HIGH SCHOOL Football, Musical Star And Son Of Actor Bernardi, To Make Stage Debut By, Steve Simmons, Beverly Hills Courier

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2009

Michael Bernardi is not only following in his father’s footsteps, but taking his own path, making his stage debut in Cabaret at the Met Theatre.

Bernardi’s father, actor Herschel Bernardi, died when his son was was only 2.

An Emmy-winner in the Peter Gunn series, the senior Bernardi was Tony-nominated for his Broadway stage roles as Zorba The Greek and Tevya in Fiddler On The Roof, known as the voice of The Jolly Green Giant and Charlie the Tuna and as Arnie on TV.

A star of early Yiddish theater, Herschel Bernardi was appearing on New York’s Second Avenue stages with his acting family before he could talk.

His 23-year-old son is now concentrating on the stage, though he has done a few small film roles and is working on his own production.

In Cabaret, he has a featured role as Cliff Bradshaw, the American writer involved with Sally Bowles (Kalinda Gay), but wooed by Bobby (Korken Alexander).

A 2003 Beverly High graduate, Bernardi played middle linebacker and guard on the football team. “I went from football practice to show rehearsals,” he said. “I went through a lot of deodorant.

“At some point I realized that I wanted to focus more on what my dream was; to immerse myself in theater and be an actor.”

So he stopped playing football, even though he was team co-captain.

Acting was something he had always taken to. He told jokes at Passover dinner, “to a crowd of old Jews. I liked performing and talking to groups of people.” And at 8, he was doing stand up at the Comedy Store.

He opened his act saying. “I have a hard life–I’m surrounded by women.”

Audiences responded and soon he was given time slots reserved for seasoned professionals–who were not always thrilled.

Since he wasn’t old enough to be in the club, he would perform and then sit in the kitchen drinking hot chocolate “with lots of whipped cream.”

Finally, he decided he “wanted to be a kid” and told his mom he wanted to stop comedy and play Pee Wee Football.

So Bernardi’s gone from comedy to football, football to theater.

He feels a strong spiritual tie with his father. “I used to sit on his lap at the piano every day,” Bernardi said. Herschel Bernardi’s recordings of lullabies allowed him to “father from beyond the grave,” says his son.

After BHHS, Bernardi attended SUNY Purchase, earning a BFA degree.

He credits BHHS Performing Arts Department Chair Joel Pressman with much of his success there.

“He taught me great discipline,” said Bernardi, who was a member of the Madrigals.

“When I got to the conservatory, there were all these kids and I was terrified. But I think the training at BHHS really did help prepare me.”

Bernardi returned to Los Angles, looking for work–in the midst of the writers’ strike.

A chance encounter with friend actor Edward Enriacas, who was in a show directed by his godfather, director Jim Eric, led to Bernardi’s current acting stint.

Open since June, the show has earned him attention and helped him get an agent.

He will celebrate his 24th birthday “as a crooner” giving an hour-long concert at Vitello’s Restaurant in Studio City.

Now he’s ready to get back to basics and “be with people who are passionate about theater. I’m ready to hit the pavement; I feel like I have my ducks in a row.”

Cabaret plays through Aug. 9., Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at The Met Theatre, 1089 N. Oxford St., Hollywood, one block east of Western Ave. and a few steps south of Santa Monica Blvd.
